Dyson AM04 Hot+Cool Fan Heater Review: Smart & safe design for efficient portable heating and cooling

Leticia January 23, 2013 3 Comments »

Dyson ACM4 Hot+Cool TechSavvyMama.com

Temperatures in the DC area have fluctuated all winter and ranged from spring-like high to below freezing as daytime highs that make us adjust our thermostat constantly to save on energy costs.  This week we’re supposed to see weather in the mid to low 20s with the chance of snow and sleet later this week. Rather than crank up the heat and spend unnecessary money heating the whole house when I spend most of my day in my home office, I’ve decided it’s the perfect time to use the Dyson AM04 Hot+Cool Fan Heater to provide heat just where I need it.

Easy to assemble

Right out of the box, the Dyson AM04 Hot+Cool is easy to use and super simple to assemble. It comes with 3 parts: a base, fan blade, and a magnetic remote control.  It takes longer to unwrap the three parts than it does to assemble the Am04. Just place the base on the bottom and rotate in the direction indicated by the arrow on the sticker until it clicks, plug it in, turn it on, push the battery compartment into the remote control, and you’re ready to use it.

Safe and smart design

Dyson AM04 Hot+Cool features Air Multiplier technology that uses high airflow and velocity to project an uninterrupted stream of hot or cool air throughout the room. Whereas traditional heating and cooling methods often chop up the air with blades that spin, Air Multiplier works to draw in and amplify air that is put out in a steady stream.

The bladeless design not only contributes to a steady stream of heat or cool air but also reduces the risk of injury. Even though safety standards for oscillating and standing box fans have improved, there’s still a chance that small fingers getting could get caught and hurt by the rotating fan blades that circulate air. The AM04 heating elements are also hidden for added safety but warning stickers on the unit’s inner rim warns that it can get hot.

Using the Dyson AM04

The Touch Tilt feature of the AM04 allows you to direct the heat exactly where you want it because it will tilt 10° degrees in either direction. It also has an oscillating range of 80° to distribute heat across an entire room better than traditional portable heaters that radiate heat outwards from the unit and generally take a long time to heat an entire room.

Since they Dyson AM04 Hot+Cool has an 8” diameter footprint, its compact design allows it to sit on a surface well out of reach of children. If it does tip over, it has an automatic shut off safety feature that turns it off immediately.

Whether you choose to heat or cool your space, AM04 features precise temperature controls that allow users to adjust the temperature according to degree settings. An easy to use control panel blends right in to the front of the unit for a smooth face. With no knobs or controls that stick out, the design remains sleek.

The remote control that comes with the AM04 is also thoughtfully designed. It has a slight curvature that not only makes it easy to figure out how to slide in the battery compartment but is also curved perfectly to attach to the top of the fan with magnets. It’s a convenient place to put your remote control for long term safe keeping, however, it’s still easy to lose the remote in the short term thanks to user memory loss!

Specifications of the Dyson AM04 Hot+Cool Fan Heater:

  • Air Multiplier Technology
  • PTC ceramic heater
  • 10 speed settings
  • Oscillation span of 80° degrees
  • Touch tilt of 10° degrees either way from upright
  • Fully variable temperature control ranging from 33°-99°F
  • LED digital temperature display
  • 22.8” H x 7.9” W x 7.9” D
  • 5.9 ft cord
  • Colors: Iron/Blue or White/Silver

Summary

While the $399.99 price tag (though it can be found on Amazon and the Dyson site for $299.99) of the Dyson AM04 Hot+Cool Fan Heater may cause some to immediately discount it as a luxury item, it is a single unit that does double duty as an effective way to heat and cool a space. If you  turn up your thermostat or turn on the air conditioning when you tend to be occupying one room in your home, chances are you can save lots of money by not using central heating and cooling systems and choosing the AM04 instead.

The sleek design certainly adds to the wow factor but just like everything Dyson creates, the engineering of the product makes it a more efficient and safe choice over other oscillating or box fans and portable heating units.

I received a Dyson AM04 Hot+Cool Fan Heater for review purposes but all opinions are my own. Amazon Affiliate links included in this post. Images courtesy of Dyson.

This is so cool. We could use one of these for our home office. It is always so cold in there. I also like how it does both heating and cooling. sounds like it is worth the money for just one unit that does it all.

It’s super cool! Again, no pun intended since I’ve mostly been using it for the heat function since it’s so cold here this week!
