The saying “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” certainly applies in Hollywood where talent is transferred from parent to child. Out as a Blu-Ray combo pack this Friday, This is 40 was a Judd Apatow family production.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been five years since Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann appeared in Apatow’s Knocked Up but they’re back again as Pete and Debbie in This is 40. In this movie, the husband and wife pair are faced with balancing the challenges and rewards of marriage and parenthood as they turn 40. Apatow’s wife, Leslie plays the mom, and his daughters, Maude and Iris Apatow, are the on-screen daughters.
Note: The following featurette is a great look back at moments from Knocked Up and with scenes from This is 40 but contains language that may not be appropriate for work or kids who may be watching over your shoulder!
The Apatows aren’t the only family who have starred in films together and in honor of This is 40’s release to the home market on Friday, here’s a look at 5 other famous Hollywood families who have worked together on the big screen.
Tom and Colin Hanks & Rita Wilson
Do you remember the television show Bosom Buddies? Its one of many projects that Tom Hanks and his wife, actress Rita Wilson, have on together. They’ve also joined forces for Volunteers and That Thing You Do! Son, Colin, also appeared alongside Tom and Rita in That Thing You Do!, Band of Brothers, and The Great Buck Howard.
Joan & John Cusack
Our kids have a soft spot in their heart for Joan Cusack thanks to her hilarious depiction of the crazy driving librarian in Kit Kittredge: An American Girl. Joan and brother, John, have worked on numerous films together, including 80s classics like Say Anything and Sixteen Candles, two of my favorite movies of that decade ever. They’ve also been in Gross Pointe Blank and High Fidelity.
Jon Voight & Angelina Jolie
Whether you love or hate Angelina Jolie, she and her father, Jon Voight have shared some memorable on screen moments including Voight as her father in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Angelina was also a child star thanks to a small part in Lookin’ To Get Out, a film that her father co-wrote and starred in.
Ben and Jerry Stiller, Anne Meara & Christine Taylor
Not only did all four appear in Zoolander but they’ve also been in other films such as Heavyweights (Ben, Jerry, and Anne) while Ben and Christine in DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story. Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara are Ben Stiller’s parents along with being a well known comedic duo. Ben is married to actress Christine Taylor who you probably remember as Marcia Brady in The Brady Bunch.
Will, Jada, Jaden & Willow Smith
The super talent Smith family is an acting and singing powerhouse of a family. Son Jaden starred alongside dad, Will, as his son in The Pursuit of Happiness, had a cameo in Men in Black II and will be his costar in the upcoming film, After Earth. Jaden also appeared in his sister, Willow’s, music video.
