Every year since the kids were born, my husband’s uncle has gifted the kids with Lionel Model Trains and FasTrack. Engines, train cars, different curves and lengths of straight Fast Track have been unwrapped with excitement on Christmas morning. Even though they’re collectibles that will be handed down to future generations, new engines and train cars mean that they’re immediately played with the minefield of shredded wrapping paper, opened boxes, and lengths of ribbon is shoved aside to reconfigure the track to accommodate our new trains.
When the kids were little, they needed help putting together the track and operating the switches and transformer but now they’re experts who can troubleshoot derailed trains and run the switch to get the train to move as fast or as slowly as they want whether in forward or reverse. It’s been fun to see how an engine and a few cars plus a circle of track has grown into a passion and almost an addiction, where the kids pour over each and every catalog that comes and look forward to their quarterly Lionel Railroader Club Inside Track issues for inspiration.
During the year, our trains are set up in the guest bedroom where the track loops around the bed posts and goes underneath the queen size bed, like a giant tunnel, before coming out and doing loops on the carpet. It’s a place where you have to be careful where you step and our sometimes clumsy Labrador isn’t allowed for fear he’ll cause a derailment!
At Christmas, the train comes upstairs to the living room where it runs around the tree. This year we’re very excited to add the Lionel Polar Express O Gauge to our collection, courtesy of Lionel. Chris Van Allsburg’s The Polar Express hardcover book has been one of our favorite holiday stories for a long time that never gets old. It’s a magical tale that evokes the wonder and magic of Christmas that I’m trying to preserve and the train set adds another element to the story and movie that we already love.
Right away the kids noticed the details on their new train set. The heavy steam locomotive puffs smoke and features a working headlight and the passenger cars light up, as it encircles the track, making them just as magical as they are in person as they are on the pages of the book and in the movie. Younger kids will need help holding the steam locomotive because it’s quite heavy, especially compared to the passenger cars and caboose but it’s a train set that comes ready to run right out of the box, making it a great gift for any train lover who also delights in the story of The Polar Express.
The Lionel Polar Express O Gauge set comes with a steam locomotive, gondola, box car, and caboose. It also comes with three straight FasTrack sections, eight curved track sections, and also a terminal that can be easily added to your existing FasTrack collection. Since it’s also the tenth anniversary of the Polar Express film, Lionel is giving away a copy of The Polar Express book autographed by author, Chris Van Allsburg, with any purchases of the O and G gauge set! For more complete information about what the Polar Express Set comes with, visit this page and select the gauge of train you wish to purchase.
