What room in your home do you go to when you need to de-stress, relax, and regroup to be able to face your day? If you don’t have a space, it’s time to create one. It doesn’t take a lot of time or money to create a dream relaxation room. Use the space you have but change the focus to health and wellness.

My place of zen is always our master bathroom that we built when we added on to our home. Part of the fun of building a bathroom meant thinking about our lifestyle and designing a room that would not only be functional but would start our day off right and provide relaxation at the end. Stepping into our master bathroom is refreshing because it’s filled with natural light at all times of the day, provides a great view that I can take in to de-stress, and is filled with personal touches that make it more of a room than just a bathroom.
As you choose a space in your house to make into your dream relaxation room, here are 7 tips on how to get started.
Clear the clutter. There is nothing zen about junk. Getting rid of unnecessary items not only reduces dust but provides visual clarity. Over time, our bathroom counter always accumulates stuff. Shampoo bottles, tubes of toothpaste, trinkets left by the children, and jewelry that has been taken off at the end of the day that always accumulates and is never put back in it’s rightful place. I got rid of my jewelry catchall and downsized to a single favorite glass dish, stashed the electric toothbrush charger under the sink, and hung up the clothes on the hooks that I’ve been meaning to put away forever!
Find plants that fit the space. Plants not only help clean the air but also improve your mental health thanks to a little green in your space. Find a plant that’s easy to take care of and fits the space. For our bathroom, a moisture loving violet that thrives in indirect light was the perfect choice for our bathroom counter. Fresh flowers from the garden in a pretty vase are provide a seasonal pop of color.
Add some art. Your relaxation room should be filled with the things you love, including art. Art work can be a favorite piece by one of your children, a favorite Instagram photo, or even a framed poster. Since bathrooms are the source of humidity, I opted for metalwork pieces purchased during last year’s trip to Haiti. The bright blue walls provide the perfect backdrop for these intricate pieces that I get to appreciate in the morning and at night.
Soothe your senses with sound. What sounds make you relax? Classical music, the sound of the waves crashing on the shore, or do you prefer to use a white noise machine to drown out environmental sounds? As part of Sharp Air USA’s #RoomtoBreathe program, I received an Envirascape Silver Springs Illuminated Relaxation Fountain with Natural Stones that was the perfect fit for the corner of our bathroom counter. I love the soft sound of water and am always finding that the kid have rearranged the rocks!
Add luxurious touches. Your relaxation room is all about you! Fill it with favorite things and luxurious touches that make you smile. Small things in our bathroom that make a big difference are a favorite bar of soap, a plush bathrobe, and some cushy slippers for tired feet at the end of the day. I also love our towel warmer because warm towels are always such a great treat after a bath or shower! In a bedroom, you might want to add a cozy throw or fancy pillows. Splurge on a great rug or light fixture you’ve been lusting after if you have a small sitting area.
Use aromatherapy for additional relaxation. In addition to the sights and sounds that fill your room, make your room smell good. The use of essential oils on your bath linens, scented candles, and an air filter like the Sharp Plasmacluster Ion Air Purifier help to reduce odors to keep your room smelling fresh and clean. Bathrooms tend to be a place where mold and bacteria grow thanks to moisture in the air. Having the Sharp Air Purifier in the bathroom helps maintain ideal humidity levels. Smart controls allow it to detect and react to particles in the air and prevent growth of harmful mold, bacteria, and germs to improve air quality and ensure a healthier environment.
Make it a device free zone. There’s nothing relaxing about hearing your smartphone buzz with text alerts and email notifications. Make your space a device free zone and leave it outside in order to take some time to truly relax.
