How to Protect Your Child’s Digital Privacy at School

October 1, 2026 By Leticia Leave a Comment

When I started this blog in 2008, my goal was to help families navigate parenting in the digital age by empowering you to make decisions about the kinds of devices and tools that were right for your family. These days it doesn’t seem like we get much of a choice. When it comes to the many digital tools kids are using in their classrooms, it feels impossible to protect your child’s digital privacy at school.

When I taught middle school computer science and engineering, I had a collection of digital tools I used as a teacher with my students and other ones I relied on as a parent. I handed out paper copies of some assignments, but others were distributed and collected digitally through online learning management systems like Canvas and Google Classroom that also served as my gradebook. I communicated with parents through Canvas, my school email, and the Remind app. My computer science students logged into Code.org to complete assignments and my 7th graders asked to play Kahoot! multiple times each class period.

Why it’s Important to Protect Your Child’s Digital Privacy at School

While we may be able to limit what is being gathered about our kids at home, there’s a lot of personal information being gathered about our kids at school. The collection of digital tools being used for educational purposes means it’s hard to protect your child’s digital privacy at school. Personal information about your child is being shared with their school system, learning apps, sports programs, parent portals, and other third-party services.

It’s hard to know who has data about our children, why they need it, or how long they’re keeping it.

To dive deeper into our kids and data that might be shared by schools, I asked Raj Ananthanpillai, author of The Trust Crisis: How Big Tech Stole Your Identity—and the New Model That Takes It Back. Raj is the founder and CEO of Trua, a digital identity-verification and screening company and a leading authority on digital trust, identity, and privacy.

The biggest thing Raj wants parents to know is school and other neighborhood apps increase children’s personal data exposure.

Raj Ananthanpillai

These days a child’s digital footprint and digital identity is being built long before they’re old enough to understand or control them. According to Raj, much of that information may remain in databases for years- and vulnerable to exposure.

Raj believes school apps and the third-party vendors that support them often collect more personal information about children than is needed for learning. These tools gather names, dates of birth, contact details, student IDs, behavior records, health information, device data, and usage patterns. They then share that information with analytics companies, cloud services, tracking tools, and other partners.

Once the data leaves the school, it sits in large databases that attract attackers. One weak password or unencrypted file can expose records for millions of students.

Children’s data is useful to criminals because it has little prior history of fraud. Stolen information can be used years later for identity theft or to build false identities.

The problem is that organizations collect and keep personal details they may not need right away. Raj says this creates stores of data that are hard to protect fully. Each extra vendor or app adds another place where a child’s information is held and another group that can reach it. The result is long-term risk that follows the child past school.

7 Questions to Ask to Protect Your Child’s Digital Privacy at School

Raj recommends parents consider requests for a child’s personal details to protect your child’s digital privacy at school by asking why.

  • Why does this tool need this specific information for its purpose?
  • What is the least amount of data required for the tool to work? Can a simple ID replace full personal details?
  • Who else will get or see the information, and what limits apply?
  • How long will the data be kept, and how can it be deleted or fixed when it is no longer needed?
  • Is the information encrypted, and does the company collect only what is needed instead of gathering extra data for later use?
  • Has the school limited the data shared with the vendor and checked the vendor’s privacy practices?
  • Is there another way to meet the educational goal without sharing sensitive personal information?

Parents should ask for clear explanations in plain language to protect your child’s digital privacy at school. It’s ok to refuse to give details that are not required.

Raj says the goal is not to reject every useful tool but to stop handing over a child’s personal information by default.  When only the data needed for a specific purpose is shared, and when people keep control over what is given out, the risks drop making it easier to protect your child’s digital privacy at school.

My best advice to parents of college students? Whe My best advice to parents of college students? When they say “you should come” - GO! ✈️

Over the last 4 years it’s been so wonderful to be invited for glimpses of Emily’s life on campus. I’ve been welcomed by her amazing friends who have become part of our family, met the professors, faculty & staff she talks so fondly of, and gotten to know fellow parents through trips to Family Weekend all while enjoying time with my best girl. 💕

Today I’m heading home as a proud mom with a full heart for all that I’ve experienced on campus during her college years and am in disbelief I’ll be back for graduation next week. 🥹

I continue to be in awe that we put something in space that existed up there for 5 months. 🥰 Our CubeSat took photos 📸 and tweeted 🐦‍⬛them out as we hoped it would thanks to the many students (and parents!) who have been involved in our meaningful real-world hands-on STEM project that enabled them to learn about technology and space over the past 11 years.

I found some old notes from a 2015 meeting and under Questions, I wrote: “If we are successful, would we do this again?”

And the answer is yes! 🎉 Here’s to SilverSat 2.0 and involving more kids to dream up a new mission for our next Silver Spring CubeSat! 💕

Happy #MedalMonday to everyone who ran a race over Happy #MedalMonday to everyone who ran a race over the weekend and is adding new race bling to their collection! 🎉 I did a thing this weekend too but it didn’t involve another race! 😂Here’s the before, swipe ⬅️ for the after!

Inspired by seeing @allytbrett_runs ’s race medals, I did a little medal reorg that makes my OCD self happy. 🙌🏼Pro tip- Instead of sliding the bar of the medal rack through the ribbon, I looped the ribbon around the bar so all the medals face forward! This small thing made a huge difference and makes me happy every time I walk into my office!💕

My next race is the 25th anniversary @stjude Memphis Marathon Weekend on December 5th. I’m thinking this anniversary year medal will be the start of a new medal rack, just like my 15th anniversary medal started this collection.🫶🏼

If you want to run Memphis with me, race registration is open! Comment Memphis and I’ll DM you the registration link and happy to answer any and all race ❓s!

Race medals are great but charity bling is better! Race medals are great but charity bling is better! 🏅When I first started running for @stjude 10 years ago, I thought I’d be one and done but here I am- 15 races later and having raised almost $50,000! 🎉

The goal has always been to help end childhood cancer and I feel so fortunate to have met the most amazing people along the way. My fellow @stjudedc Hero Ambassadors are a group of dedicated baddies who I adore. 🥰

We cheer for each other on and off the course and as my friend & fellow DC Hero Ambassador @jess_santora says, “My goal was never just to reach the finish line- it was to help more people get there too.” 🏃🏻‍♀️

Here’s to more races, more money raised for St. Jude, and forever friendships! Already excited (and fundraising) for St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend this December. ✨Fundraising link in bio and donations of any amount are appreciated to help me reach my $4,000 goal! 🙏🏼

When Team @otfsilverspring gets out of the studio When Team @otfsilverspring gets out of the studio for @runrockandroll DC! 🎉 Today 20 of us got out from under the orange lights and crushed 5Ks and half marathons to benefit @stjude kids and families as St. Jude Heroes.💪🏼

I am so proud of each and every one of us and especially incredibly grateful that OTFSS members said yes to running today! 🥰

We fundraised, trained, and ran to give families hope that their kids will survive childhood cancer and to support researchers as they work towards a cure for childhood cancer and other life threatening diseases. 💕

As a mom of 2, I know no parent should ever have to hear “your child has cancer” so thank you Team OTFSS for supporting St. Jude’s mission by running the streets of DC! We did it and I’m already looking forward to next year’s RNR DC race so we can do it again!🧡🧡🧡
