In honor of Monday, September 22 being Family Dinner Day, I thought I’d select the Family Day website as this week’s Website of the Week. Family Dinner Day was started by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University to keep kids substance free.
We all know how important it is to sit down for family dinners. Time to talk and connect with our kids is great but increasingly difficult as kids get older due to individual schedules. But the more you sit down as a family, CASA research shows that engaging with your kids at the dinner table can be an effective tool to help prevent substance abuse in kids, regardless of ethnicity, affluence, age, and gender.
The Family Day website is full of resources for parents of children of all ages and stages. Here are some highlights:
- Family Dinner Kit with downloadable blank placemats, recipes, menu planner, and conversation starters.
- A PDF with research about the importance of family dinners
- Tips on talking to your kids about drugs and alcohol
- Signs to look for if you are concerned that your child might be experimenting with drugs and alcohol
Whether you dine at home or go out to eat at your favorite restaurant, enjoy your family dinner and spending time together!
