Friday Faves: Last Minute Mother’s Day Gifts

May 6, 2011 By Leticia

If you’re still searching for that perfect gift for that special woman to honor her on Mother’s Day, you’re getting down to the wire but I can appreciate how it takes time to find the present that is just right!

According to a new survey conducted by independent research firm Toluna and Buy.com, moms prefer gift cards or pampering rather than flowers.  Survey results showed:

  • Moms ranked flowers their “least desired” gift; instead, their No. 1 preference is a spa day (23 percent) followed by gift cards (20 percent)
  • Moms over age 55 ranked gift cards (38 percent) followed by a new computer (25 percent) as the most desired presents.
  • 22 percent of respondents plan to spend at least $25 more on mom this year, compared to last year
  • When asked the ideal way to spend Mother’s Day, 32 percent of moms cited a “nice meal out” and 30 percent preferred “spending time with family at home”
Regardless of the survey statistics, the items below are some of my favorite things that I’ve tried and would be happy to get or give.  While they aren’t likely to arrive in time for Sunday, who said moms needed to be appreciated just one day during the year?  IMHO mom appreciation needs to be done all year long so go ahead and extend the sentiment of the day a little longer!
Passion Parties Simply Sensual
Body Butter
Pamper moms with a SpaFinder gift certificate that allows her to choose where and how she wants to be pampered.  For some daily at-home pampering, Passion Parties’ Simply Sensual Pomegranate Ginger line is available in a scrub, shower creme, and shave crème. My favorite is the Pomegranate Ginger Body Butter ($29)!
Jawbone’s Jambox Speaker
Music lovin’ moms can appreciate the big sound that comes out of the tiny wireless Jambox speaker from Jawbone ($199.99).  This sleek device is small enough to tuck in a purse or diaper bag to tote to the playground, school for a class party, or sit on an office desk for conference calls (hello, built in microphone!), but sound big enough to fill a room or whatever outside space you are occupying with the ability to be heard over the sound of kids playing!  Get a free J baseball cap by entering the coupon code FREEHAT.
Snapfish Silver Locket
Well-accessorized moms will alway appreciate jewelry to add to their collection like this locket from Snapfish ($85) bearing a photo completely sealed under plastic for all eternity.  Or wear your child’s silhouette on your finger with a silhouette ring ($20-65) from La Papier Studio.  I’m always a fan of anything that Lisa from Studio Jewel makes because her hand crafted silver jewelry is one of a kind!  Shop Lisa’s etsy store for 15% off with the code TechSavvy15 and be sure to take a look at the Artisan Bracelet ($88) I covet in her one of a kind section!
Yummie Tummie Mayumi
Multitasking fashionista moms will appreciate garments that do the same.  Flattering and slimming at the same time, Miracle Body Jeans and MiracleSuit swimwear will always have mom look her best whether in a pair of jeans or at the pool.  My MiracleJeans are my go to pair and I’m in need of another!  Pair fab jeans with a Yummie Tummie top (like Beckie– $86, Mayumi– $76, or Lucie– $96) that smoothes and flatters for the ultimate confidence booster.
Warm weather loving moms will like adding Flip Out Sandals ($19.99) to her flip flop collection since they’re the ultimate accessory for at home and for summer travel.  Go from “flip flop to fabulous” by simply swapping the interchangeable shoe jewels ($9.99 and up) to match the outfit du jour or moment!  Two sets of shoe jewelry are included with every pair of Flip Outs!  Get 20% off the collection with the code MOMSDAY
NOOK Color by
Barnes & Noble
Avid reader moms who are email and app addicts will love the enhancements to the new NOOK Color!  For the same price as the original Nook ($249), the newest software release for the device features the ability to load Android apps, send and receive email from your existing accounts, interactive children’s books, and password protect the credit card tied to your account so your kids don’t accidentally download every single version of Angry Birds.  Ok, maybe that’s not so accidental but it helps to curb whatever rage would come of downloading tons of fun apps!  The touch screen is also backlit and adjusts according to whatever light you are in.  For ultimate convenience, NOOK Color can be purchased at local WalMart, Staples, and Best Buy stores in addition to Barnes & Noble!  Be sure to get a great case to go along with it and then bask in the glory of having purchased the perfect gift with minimal planning!
Sketchers Shape Ups
Fit moms might want a pair of soft new yoga pants ($35.95-44.95) from Organically Grown (15% off with the code MOTHER EARTH) while chasing the kids around the park or during a morning run in her Sketchers Shape Ups.  I was skeptical of these funky looking shoes at first that are said to burn 13.8% more calories but have to admit that they really work to tone even during normal activity.  The rocking motion created by the design of the bottom of the shoe really is more comfortable since it mimics the natural motion of your foot as it takes a step.  Other shoes feel very flat in comparison!

Products were received for review purposes.  Many thanks to the sponsors of Getting Gorgeous who provided samples of many of the items featured in this gift guide.  All opinions are my own.

Today we’re celebrating National Rescue Dog Day Today we’re celebrating National Rescue Dog Day because we’re so glad Goldie and Murphy are part of our family! 🐶 We gave Goldie her forever home when she was 6 months old. She had been given up by her original family because she was just too much for them. She was an enthusiastic pup who loved to jump straight up in the air when she got excited and she used to hop the fence in the mornings to go visit her best dog friend, Katy, over our back fence. She still jumps from standing when she sees a deer, meets a favorite dog friend, or gets a visit from @lisatasch but now at age 5, she’s more calm and forever faithful. 🦮We met Murphy and his 9 brothers and sisters just days after he was born although we didn’t know he would be the puppy we’d claim as ours. Murphy has that puppy energy but in his quiet moments is a total love bug. He hogs the free space in our king bed (he even has his own pillow!) and loves nothing more than to press his body into me or lie directly on me. 🐾 Goldie and Murphy came to us through @labrescuelrcp and we couldn’t be happier that they’re part of our family! ❤️ #rescuedogday #labrescue #labrador #adoptdontshop
After 3 days at St. Jude Children’s Research Hos After 3 days at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, I’m leaving Memphis so very grateful to be able to support St. Jude’s mission of working to end childhood cancer. ❤️ Spending time connecting, brainstorming, and absorbing the wisdom of fellow Hero Ambassadors from around the country was inspiring because the work we do fundraising through our endurance events helps St. Jude do the incredible work they do to ensure families never receive a bill for their child’s treatment, housing, travel, or food and continue important research that will continue to reduce rates of pediatric cancer and other childhood diseases. I am so looking forward to running in Memphis again this December! 🎉 If you’ve ever thought of running a race that does so much good in the world, join me! I’d love to have you come to Memphis and run with me! Or you can always donate through the fundraising link in my bio. ❤️ #stjude #stjudeheroes #memphis #stjudedmv

When we bought our house 24 years ago, it came wit When we bought our house 24 years ago, it came with many things we didn’t love like rotted porch boards, 1 bathroom, and peeling paint (inside and out!) but it also came with things we did love like old, mature trees, crazy shaped boxwood bushes, and these spectacular peonies! 🌸 Every year when they bloom I’m so glad that these beauties conveyed with the purchase of our house and I’m glad we rebuilt our porch so we can step out our front door to admire them in their glory! 🩷#peonies #peonyseason #garden #blooms #spring
As a teacher and parent, I am well aware of the me As a teacher and parent, I am well aware of the mental health challenges our youth face and am really pleased to share that over the weekend I became certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid through the National Council for Mental Wellbeing! 🎉 I’ve always worked to build relationships with the young people in my life- whether my kids’ friends or students- and this certification has made me more mindful of the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges so I can have important and supportive conversations when symptoms first start to appear. 🗣️A big component of the training also included developing a self-care plan which is critical when supporting others. 💕 I’m so grateful to have taken this certification for free through the University of Maryland whose blended learning format (2 hours of self paced online work + 5 hour instructor led class over Zoom) was fantastic! 💻 The teacher in me really applauds the course design and I’m glad to join the 3 million+ in the U.S. certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid. 🏥 If this is something you’re interested in doing, University of Maryland has free courses on Saturdays or Sundays from 10-4pm between June-October. Swipe ⬅️ for more information, including a QR code with more information and a survey to take as part of the sign up process. And if you have any questions- leave a comment or DM me. I’m happy to help you get certified too! ❤️ #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthfirstaid #youthmentalhealth #mentalhealthawarenessmonth
