If you’ve ever read the classic chapter book, Mr. Popper’s Penguins
, then you may love the novelty of the movie version or be appalled that very little of the plot is based on the book but Mr. Popper’s Penguins, the movie, is a contemporary adaptation of the classic story that we found enjoyable.
In this version, Jim Carrey plays Mr. Popper, a divorced real estate developer living in a swanky New York City apartment and sharing custody of two children who are less than enamored with him. Mr. Popper’s inheritance of six penguins from his explorer father serves as the turning point in this family comedy and bring the family closer together as they care for them and work to rescue them from the clutches of a zookeeper seeking to trade them for other animals.
The kids loved the hilarious antics of the penguins, some involving pooping and farting. Captain Computer secretly wished that we could turn the inside of the house into a snowy winter wonderland for some indoor sled fun down our stairs. They loved knowing that the movie was actually filmed on a refrigerated soundstage with real Emperor Penguins!
Mr. Popper’s Penguins opens in theaters tomorrow- Friday, June 17. To determine if the movie is right for your family, visit Common Sense Media whose review will go live tomorrow.
My family was provided with complimentary movie tickets to attend the screening. I was not required to post about the movie and all opinions are my own.
