Eventbrite Makes Event Organizing Easy for Everyone

September 6, 2011 By Leticia

If event organizing seems like a daunting task, Eventbrite makes it easy for everyone.  Whether organizing professional events, coordinating PTA fundraisers for your child’s school, or arranging casual meetups, Eventbrite empowers individuals to become event organizers and provides a free service for free events.  Users can quickly and easily use tools to create custom event pages, set up ticket sales, and publicize events through social networking sites.

The Splash Creative Media team recently had the opportunity to interview co-founder, Eventbrite president, and mom entrepreneur, Julia Hartz. Julia started the company with her husband and business partner in 2006.  She made Forbes.com’s Ten Female Entrepreneurs and Mompreneurs to Watch and we were thrilled to have had some time to talk more about Eventbrite for events and the constant challenge of balancing work and family.

Eventbrite president Julia Hartz
Splash Creative Media (SCM): What are some of the biggest challenges planners face when hosting an event? How does Eventbrite help them?
Julia Hartz (JH): Eventbrite can provide help on wording, setting up your event page, ticket types, and how to best drive sales. These tools help to ease anxiety.

SCM: What are three key advantages of planning an event with Eventbrite?
JH: 1) Eventbrite provides visibility and accessibility to all of the data generated about and for the attendees to your event.
2) Control. The organizer owns their own events. Our interface is designed to be self-service and give organizers full control, but we have an excellent customer service team that is willing to help! 3) Eventbrite helps you get the word out on your event. The site is designed in such a way that events can be shared on social media. Turns ticket buyers to be your event promoters. Rely on people who really care about you events to build relevance around it and create word of mouth.

SCM: What about non-profits looking to leverage the Eventbrite platform?  Raising money through events is an excellent way to raise money and stretches the affinity and connection of your audience to your cause. It connects the audience in a way that only live events can.

JH: Eventbrite helps non-profit organizations reduce the ticket rate and the built in community for non-profits helps share best practices, tips, and provides support in planning events.  In the past year and a half, since we launched Eventbrite for Causes, we’ve helped non-profits raise $25 million.

SCM: A big concern of schools is privacy. For the peace of mind of principals, PTA members, and parents, how does Eventbrite provide for privacy on the website?

JH:  We offer a “https” site and other privacy options such as invite-only, password protection, and making events non-searchable. We do not share any data with anyone one nor will we sell it. All data belongs to the event organizer. Everything is hosted on the organizer’s page. I’m excited about Fill the Backpack because it’s an exciting opportunity for Eventbrite to get the word out to school and organizations looking for help to plan and ticket their events.
SCM: Being a Mom and a savvy business woman what is your biggest daily challenge?
JH: Juggling my schedule. Every week the calendar is a puzzle and having to figure out how to make sure everyone is where they need to be. It’s like being the CEO of the house.  I’m always calling for help in a panic to cover some tiny amount of time.
My day is packed. I work shorter days and take Fridays off, but it’s back to back on the days I am at work and I have a fear that my daycare is going to call and asking where my daughter is and I will have no idea!

SCM: Any tips for working moms doing the juggling act?

JH: A year into Emma’s (age 3) life, I turned the corner. I don’t know if I was just more confidence in being a mom and making the right decisions, but I started being open to getting help.  I was ready to ask and open to receiving it without feeling guilty about asking for help. It was a brave moment to get the help I needed!  It’s key to being a successful mom and running a successful company. You have to be able to delegate, collaborate, and hire help.

Don’t forget about tonight’s Fill the Backpack Twitter Party!  You can still RSVP for $2000+ in prizes!

Today we’re celebrating National Rescue Dog Day Today we’re celebrating National Rescue Dog Day because we’re so glad Goldie and Murphy are part of our family! 🐶 We gave Goldie her forever home when she was 6 months old. She had been given up by her original family because she was just too much for them. She was an enthusiastic pup who loved to jump straight up in the air when she got excited and she used to hop the fence in the mornings to go visit her best dog friend, Katy, over our back fence. She still jumps from standing when she sees a deer, meets a favorite dog friend, or gets a visit from @lisatasch but now at age 5, she’s more calm and forever faithful. 🦮We met Murphy and his 9 brothers and sisters just days after he was born although we didn’t know he would be the puppy we’d claim as ours. Murphy has that puppy energy but in his quiet moments is a total love bug. He hogs the free space in our king bed (he even has his own pillow!) and loves nothing more than to press his body into me or lie directly on me. 🐾 Goldie and Murphy came to us through @labrescuelrcp and we couldn’t be happier that they’re part of our family! ❤️ #rescuedogday #labrescue #labrador #adoptdontshop
After 3 days at St. Jude Children’s Research Hos After 3 days at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, I’m leaving Memphis so very grateful to be able to support St. Jude’s mission of working to end childhood cancer. ❤️ Spending time connecting, brainstorming, and absorbing the wisdom of fellow Hero Ambassadors from around the country was inspiring because the work we do fundraising through our endurance events helps St. Jude do the incredible work they do to ensure families never receive a bill for their child’s treatment, housing, travel, or food and continue important research that will continue to reduce rates of pediatric cancer and other childhood diseases. I am so looking forward to running in Memphis again this December! 🎉 If you’ve ever thought of running a race that does so much good in the world, join me! I’d love to have you come to Memphis and run with me! Or you can always donate through the fundraising link in my bio. ❤️ #stjude #stjudeheroes #memphis #stjudedmv

When we bought our house 24 years ago, it came wit When we bought our house 24 years ago, it came with many things we didn’t love like rotted porch boards, 1 bathroom, and peeling paint (inside and out!) but it also came with things we did love like old, mature trees, crazy shaped boxwood bushes, and these spectacular peonies! 🌸 Every year when they bloom I’m so glad that these beauties conveyed with the purchase of our house and I’m glad we rebuilt our porch so we can step out our front door to admire them in their glory! 🩷#peonies #peonyseason #garden #blooms #spring
As a teacher and parent, I am well aware of the me As a teacher and parent, I am well aware of the mental health challenges our youth face and am really pleased to share that over the weekend I became certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid through the National Council for Mental Wellbeing! 🎉 I’ve always worked to build relationships with the young people in my life- whether my kids’ friends or students- and this certification has made me more mindful of the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges so I can have important and supportive conversations when symptoms first start to appear. 🗣️A big component of the training also included developing a self-care plan which is critical when supporting others. 💕 I’m so grateful to have taken this certification for free through the University of Maryland whose blended learning format (2 hours of self paced online work + 5 hour instructor led class over Zoom) was fantastic! 💻 The teacher in me really applauds the course design and I’m glad to join the 3 million+ in the U.S. certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid. 🏥 If this is something you’re interested in doing, University of Maryland has free courses on Saturdays or Sundays from 10-4pm between June-October. Swipe ⬅️ for more information, including a QR code with more information and a survey to take as part of the sign up process. And if you have any questions- leave a comment or DM me. I’m happy to help you get certified too! ❤️ #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthfirstaid #youthmentalhealth #mentalhealthawarenessmonth
