One of the best ways to know if kids of any age truly understand something is to get them to explain it in their own words. This is part of the concept behind Trend Micro’s What’s Your Story video contest, a user-generated video contest designed to empower youth to be leaders in educating others about the safe and responsible use of the Internet.
2011 Grand Prize Winner: Where Are You?
For the third year, Trend Micro is encouraging youth to be advocates and leaders in the realm of internet safety by allowing them to lend their voice to become part of the solution. I first learned about this contest last year and love how unique it is in requiring participants to create a message about topics like taking action against bullying, maintaining a positive online reputation, and smart cell phone use to engage kids about using technology wisely. The 2011 winning videos can be viewed here and Trend Micro has an entire page of resources to aid those who want to tell their story.
Who can enter? Anyone ages 13 and older can enter as an individual or part of a school team.
What do you get? Trend Micro is giving away a grand prize: $10,000 USD and 6 runner-up prizes of $1,000 each; 3 for the best school entry in each category and 3 for the best individual entry in each category.
How are the videos judged? What’s Your Story submissions rely on peer review and crowdsourcing to help select the winners. Unlike other video contests that usually rely on static and subjective criteria, What’s Your Story gets kids to stay actively engaged throughout the entire contest, from the time the videos are submitted until the winners are chosen. Towards the end of the contest, the What’s Your Story judging panel that includes representatives from Common Sense Media, ConnectSafely, Cyberbullying Research Center, Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo! Safely, The Wireless Foundation, and more will review the finalists.
When does the contest end? This is a 3 part contest that runs from February 7 – May 7. The various parts are broken down into the following:
- Submit your video from now until April 3 about one of 3 topics: take action against bullying, keep a good rep online, or be cell smart.
- Submissions can be viewed and rated any time before the rating period ends on April 17.
- Judging period & winner notification: 18 April – May 7.
- The winner announcement will be made on or around May 8.
