Teachers of Harry Potter fans can enjoy a virtual author visit with J.K. Rowling via webcast from Edinburgh, Scotland courtesy of Scholastic’s Harry Potter Reading Club this Thursday, October 11 at 12:00 pm EST / 9:00 am PST. The webcast is free for teachers, non-educators, and kids. RSVP for the event by using the Count Me In button on the right side of the site.
For teachers watching the webcast with their class, Scholastic provides a handy checklist of technical requirements to ensure that your technology is ready to go so you and your students don’t miss a minute with J.K. Rowling.
If you haven’t ever visited the Harry Potter Reading Club site, it’s a must visit for any Harry Potter fan and a wealth of resources for teachers and homeschooling parents alike.
Resources on the site include:
Access to a pronunciation guide to click on words from the book that you don’t quite know how to say to hear how J.K. Rowling would say them.
A glossary of terms from the Harry Potter series.
Downloadable PDF discussion guide for The Sorcerer’s Stone.
4 new Harry Potter themed activities to download for free each month. Activities are designed to engage students in creative writing, art, or critical thinking skills. October’s activities include:
- Invent your own sport as the creative writing exercise
- Make your own Halloween Recipe of Cauldron Cakes! Use pictures and words to describe the ingredients and process.
- Test your knowledge of Harry Potter by matching characters to quotes.
- Play More Things That Must Not Be Named, a word association game where a player has to provide descriptive words, avoiding the 3 things that must not be named, in order to guess objects or people associated with the books. For example, if you want players to guess snitch, you can’t use quidditch, flying, or golden.
