Last October Little Miss Techie started seeing an orthodontist. Every week we adjust a spacer between her upper teeth to make room as her adult teeth come in but at her last appointment, her orthodontist talked to us about an extraction. Ugh. 4 teeth have to be pulled from the lower part of my baby’s mouth as her adult teeth come in. Double ugh. This is a process that we’re not looking forward to.
Armed with names of good oral surgeons and x-rays from our orthodontist, we’re planning to ask our pediatric dentist for a second opinion. We value our orthodontist’s professional opinion but we just want to be sure this is a necessary procedure.
I like to ask for a second opinion for medical advice. Doctors, dentists, and orthodontists have varying opinions based on personal philosophy and practice and I want to make sure that I’m considering all of my options instead of just diving in. A second opinion can also be extremely valuable for people who face complex, risky or costly treatments. It may reveal simpler, less expensive or more effective treatment options.
However, recent survey results from a Harris Interactive poll conducted on behalf of Invisalign found only 19 percent said they would seek a second opinion for a medical condition. 17 percent seek a second opinion for a medical procedure and a dismal 6 percent for dental work. In contrast, 70 percent of respondents would seek a second opinion for a costly vehicle repair. More than half would seek additional advice for a major car repair and 30 percent would for personal electronics repair.
I don’t know if Invisalign is in our future but it’s something I’d consider based on what I’ve learned about it in the past. I know that Invisalign’s treatment capabilities are not limited to mild cosmetic cases. I’d be interested to learn more about whether the advances in its proprietary technology could be effective in helping my daughter as we venture down the long road of orthodontic treatments.
To help bring awareness to the importance of a second opinion, Invisalign conducting a to give away $50 to one lucky individual per day and a $100 grand prize through October 15. Enter each day until you win!
