One of my favorite parts of my day is bedtime read-alouds with Little Miss Techie. Even though she’s an avid independent reader, there’s something special about the time we spend together each night reading and talking about her day before she falls asleep. At almost ten, I know that one day she’ll tell me that she wants to read on her own which will break my heart but until then, it’s always fun to explore a new book together.
We recently read I Funny and the sequel, I Even Funnier. I Even Funnier is the hilarious second installment in James Patterson’s #1 New York Times bestselling series for kids about middle schooler, Jamie Grimm, and his dreams about being a stand up comic. The book explores family relationships with Jamie’s adoptive parents and bully of an older adoptive brother, wonderfully loyal friendships that every kid hopes to have, and the importance of pursuing your dreams.
In I Even Funnier, Jamie is off to regionals in Boston to compete in Planet’s Funniest Kid Comic Contest after winning a local competition in his town and being crowned Funniest Kid in the State of New York in the first book. His bully of an adoptive brother is back to cause more mayhem in his life while his friends pledge their unwavering support in helping him prepare for the competition. Jamie also finds that there’s another kid at school who thinks he’s a million times funnier than he is which causes some comedic showdowns in the most unlikely of places! I won’t spoil the book by telling you any more details about the plot but here are Little Miss Techie’s sharing her favorite part of I Even Funnier!
I Even Funnier is geared towards ages seven and up and it’s a great read for reluctant readers thanks to short easy to read chapters. Both books do contain some topics that could result in teachable moments about adoption, parental death, differently abled kids, and a first kiss so be sure to consider the age and maturity of your child before turning them loose to read the books on their own. Little Miss Techie is nine – almost ten – and we read the first book and half of the second book together before she couldn’t wait for bedtime and finished the book on her own.
I Even Funnier comes out on December 9 but you can click here to read a few chapters for free. I Funny fans can get more information on the official site, by following author James Patterson on Twitter and Facebook, or searching the #IEvenFunnier hashtag.
