Weekly Reads: Disney Layoffs, Free Getty Images, TSA on Instagram, NatGeo’s Live From Space

March 9, 2014 By Leticia

Snowdrops I TechSavvyMama.com

Another long hiatus but I swear, in honor of a new season and what we hope is the end of winter for good, this feature will be back with more regularity like the title suggests!

{Headlines}

This week Disney Interactive announced huge cuts including the end of BabyZone.com, the 3 year old Spoonful site that delivered daily inspiration for fun, food, and parenting, and layoffs that cut 25% of the staff. The 700 people that were laid off include the talented team I worked with as a writer for Babble. So if you know of any sites hiring online editors, I have a few names to pass on to you!

Getty Images announced that they’re allowing bloggers to use their images for free as a way to combat piracy but while it may sound sweet, it definitely comes with some strings attached. Michele McGraw shares How to Embed Getty Images for Free and the pros and cons of doing so. It’s a must read!

{Newsworthy}

Have you heard?  TSA is on Instagram! Their official feed may only have 58 photos so far but it provides a fascinating inside look at some of the items confiscated at airports around the country (spoiler: lots of guns and knives disguised as all kinds of objects) and a chance to meet the dogs of the TSA. If you want to know more about what was confiscated and where, the TSA also has a blog! Their Week in Review posts detail the number of artfully concealed prohibited items, miscellaneous prohibited items, stun guns, and firearms along with which airport they were found, caliber, and whether they were loaded or not. Oh, and there’s an abundance of helpful travel advice too.

Fascinated by space? Tune into the premiere of National Geographic Channel’s COSMOS: A Spacetime Odyssey tonight – Sunday, March 9 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. If there’s a burning question that your kids have for an astronaut, now is the time to submit them to be considered to be answered through National Geographic’s Live From Space global television event which will be broadcast live from the International Space Station on Friday, March 14 at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT). Astronauts on the Space Station will be answering viewers’ questions that can be submitted via Instagram photo or video using the hashtag #HelloFromEarth. Questions submitted for consideration can be viewed through the #HelloFromEarth gallery.

Annual mammogram = ✅ This might not the most exc Annual mammogram = ✅ This might not the most exciting way to start any day but PLEASE don't put off your annual exam. These days you don’t even need a referral if you’re over 40. If it’s been a year since your last exam, you can call to make an appointment directly with your radiologist so make that appointment, mask up, and go in the name of self care. ❤ More details about when you might need a referral in the comments below. Thanks to @notallwhowanderarelost1109 for flagging this for me! 💕

I’ve never run a full marathon and probably never will but I love a good @orangetheory challenge, especially Marathon Month! 🏅I love setting a goal for each class and watching the miles accumulate during the month. This month I ran 26.9 miles during 15 classes and since the month isn’t over, I can still add to my distance total. 🏃🏻‍♀️Huge thanks to the amazing @otfsilverspringmd coaches for all the motivation, especially Head Coach @jrauch13 who told me to go for the full, rather than the half I originally signed up for. 🧡 Feeling ready for my annual @stjude Memphis Marathon Weekend half this December! 🎉 #orangetheory #marathonmonth #otf #stjude #stjudeheroes

The following month I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder called Graves’ disease. 🩺Since July is Graves’ Disease Awareness Month, I’m sharing the story of my diagnosis on the blog to educate and help others. If you, or someone you know, is diagnosed with Graves’, they are at higher risk of developing Thyroid Eye Disease (TED), a separate but related autoimmune disease. 👀 To learn more about the symptoms of TED, common treatments, and to find a TED Eye Specialist near you, visit FOCUSonTED.com. #Ad #GravesDisease #autoimmune #overactivethyroid
I came, I presented, I exhibited! 🎉 I’m back I came, I presented, I exhibited! 🎉 I’m back from 4 busy, yet inspiring, days in Atlanta at the American School Counselors Association’s annual conference where I got to speak to counselors from around the country with @mrbriancoleman and @ask_listen_learn. 🗣️I spoke about middle school brain development and why prevention education matters. 🧠The middle school brain is undergoing rapid development and changes so it’s important for our kids to know about the parts of their brains, what each does, and how these various parts are affected by alcohol. I’m proud of the work I do with educators to share Ask, Listen, Learn’s free prevention education curriculum because I know when kids understand the science and facts about what their brain does, how it works, and how it’s affected by alcohol, they’re more likely to make healthy decisions. 💕 #ASCA23 #dreambig #schoolcounselor #educator #AskListenLearn #healthychoices
