Part of the magic of the movies is being immersed in worlds that are completely different than our own thanks to visually stunning scenes that take our breath away. Whether real or animated places created with computer graphics, I find myself sitting in awe of the scenes before me wondering how they were created as they evoke certain emotions thanks to colors, lighting, and the way characters are depicted in the scenes.
Next semester Emily will be taking digital arts as a middle school elective and under how technology is used as part of the creative process is an important part of her learning. One of the best examples of digital arts can be seen through computer graphics in animated movies and thanks to Sony Pictures Animation, I have an exclusive behind the scenes look at the making of Hotel Transylvania 2.
Holding the record for being Sony Pictures Animation’s biggest film ever and holding the record for the biggest September weekend of all time at the U.S. box office, it’s great to get an inside look at the making of the movie with director Genndy Tartakovsky (Star Wars: Clone Wars, Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Laboratory) and his animation team who walks us through amazing visuals related to lighting, animation, character effects, simulation techniques, and more.
As an epic blizzard descends on the Washington, D.C. area this afternoon, we’re excited to have Hotel Transylvania 2 as part of our snowstorm movie lineup. I love that this clip provides an inside look at lighting and color to help my kids understand how color scripts, color keys, and backgrounds are used in the newest comedic adventures of Drac, Mavis, and their monster friends Frank, Murray, Wayne, and Griffin.
