By nature, human beings are creatures of habit and while change is inevitable, it’s not always easy. As parents, we deal with change on a constant basis as our kids grow. There are changes at every age and stage and it seems that just as you’re getting used to your kids in one stage, they transform overnight, leaving you scratching your head and wondering how to deal with this next one.
As Thomas and Emily have grown up, my husband and I aren’t dealing with the rapid changes that come with the baby, toddler, and preschool years but there are still transitions that we face as a family. This year Emily started middle school and next year will be Thomas’ last year in elementary school. Just yesterday, contributor Lisa, told me “Don’t blink” as she reflected on the fact that it was the last day that she’d be picking her 15 year old up from high school. Next year he will drive himself to and from school, a job that has always been hers that has come with many bonding moments.
There’s no doubt that our kids are growing up quickly. Change is inevitable regardless of how many children you have but when you’re a family of 19, change is all you know.
“We have had more things going on in the Bates family than in the Bates family history,” said Nathan Bates in the season premiere of Bringing Up Bates Season 4.
Last week Bringing Up Bates returned for a fourth season and in episode 1, Big Family, Big Changes, we saw how much things are changing for Gil and Kelly Jo Bates, the proud parents of 19 children and a growing number of grandchildren. As the Bates kids begin to forge their own paths outside of the family and from new loves, to new careers and new babies, Gil and Kelly are experiencing both the highs and lows of life that all parents experience. Throughout the season, we’ll get to watch how Gil and Kelly handle the many changes to their family as the season unfolds. Just like with any family, there will be sweet moments, funny ones, and others that just touch your heart.
Tonight there will be a brand new Bringing Up Bates episode beginning at 9 pm ET on the UP network or you can always catch up online. Tune in to meet the whole family! If you are unsure what channel UP is for your area, click here.
