It’s no secret that we love littleBits! We collect sets like they’re trading cards, adding new bits to our collection each time that add to the possibilities of what we can make and couldn’t be more excited about the brand new littleBits Gizmos & Gadgets Kit, 2nd Edition.
Usually when we get a new set of littleBits, I have a chance to take a photo of the contents. Not this time!
Thomas spotted the box, cast aside the instruction book, and took it over to his project table to organize the 13 bits by type.
He immediately noticed the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Bit that gives kids the power to control from any compatible smart device. Upon realizing that he had a bit that could control his inventions from a smartphone, his eyes lit up and he ran up to his room to grab his iPhone to download the free littleBits Invent app (for iOS and Android).
As he waited for the app to download, he flipped through the instruction book. I could see the wheels in his head turning as he thumbed through, trying to decide which of the 16 inventions he should make first or if he should look at the littleBits YouTube channel for inspiration.
Suddenly he was building, connecting the magnetic building blocks together to create something new that he could control with the app. Before long he had attached 4 wheels to the mounting board, attached the motor, and was figuring out how to control his car with the littleBits app!
littleBits are indeed that simple. Buy. Open box. Create.
Like the other littleBits sets, littleBits Gizmos & Gadgets Kit, 2nd Edition comes with everything you need to start creating. There are 13 bits in the box along with accessories.
The invention guide features 16 amazing projects (bubble blowing bot, crawling inchworm, spinning wireless rover car, and a DIY arcade game are just 4 of the projects that are included in the guide) with step-by-step instructions to get kids inventing fast and there are plenty of ideas for them to take their ideas in different directions to make completely new creations.
We find lots of inspiration through the littleBits YouTube channel and other makers who use littleBits and share videos of their creations. Even though this means a bit of screen time, it’s productive and active screen time where inspiration leads to creation. There’s real science, engineering, art, and math skills involved as kids problem solve and invent in order to control creations via Bluetooth wireless technology on their smart devices. Plus the possibilities are endless thanks to reusable bits that come apart just as easily as they’re put back together.
