How can you show your mom you really love her? While ongoing expressions of love and appreciation throughout the year are always preferred, Mother’s Day is a chance to give her a gift that she wouldn’t buy herself or doesn’t know she needs or wants until she unboxes it. Whether the home is her castle, she hasn’t let her mom status compromise her sense of style, loves a good workout, capturing every moment of motherhood, or just likes hanging out and watching movies, these 17 gifts are some of my favorites that I know she’d love too.
For the Home
Aera ($250)— What do luxury hotels and spas have in common? A luscious signature scent that relaxes you with the first breath. Make your home the best smelling home on the block with the gift of Aera. With a long history of creating beautiful fragrance experiences in public places like hotels, stores, malls, commercial buildings, airports, train stations, and theaters, Aera’s technology is reinventing the way homes smell thanks to their scent delivery system that works with your smartphone. Created by perfumers, designers, engineers, marketers, technologists, The Aera Starter Set allows you to infuse your home with fragrance that remains constant throughout the day, day after day. Use the app to create a scent schedule, alter the scent strength, control Aera devices in multiple rooms of your house, and order refills. It’s an amazingly compact system that delivers incredibly subtle fragrance that makes my home smell fantastic. Each Aera Starter Set comes with one fragrance capsule. Not sure what scent mom will love? Use the fragrance profile tool to help you select from the seven available.
Sonnenglas ($34.99)— I admit that I had never heard of Sonnenglas before one arrived at my doorstep but I am in love with this stylish mason jar that features a solar panel lid that contains two LEDs that light up when the sun goes down. Sonnenglas was developed in South Africa in 2011 as a source of light for people in areas with no access to electricity. The solar panel on the jar lid collects solar energy during the day and at night (or can be charged via micro USB) and a magnet on the lid’s latch activates the light to create a beautiful glow. The inside of the jar can be filled to match your décor or left empty. And not only is Sonnenglas affordable, it is made from recycled glass. 70% of the materials used coming from South Africa, where the company trains otherwise unskilled workers, and has created jobs for nearly 70 men and women who had no other job prospects.
Meural Canvas ($595)— For moms that love visiting art museums and decorating the walls of their home with beautiful photos, paintings, and kid-designed pieces, Meural Canvas is the perfect home décor gift that allows you to showcase fine art, family photos, and kid art. This high tech product looks more like a beautiful painting than a WiFi-enabled digital art frame that can change content with the wave of a hand, your computer, or Meural’s mobile app. Content can be selected from the 30,000 pieces that are part of Meural’s digital collection (sourced from top museums, artists estates, and cultural institutions, like the New York Public Library archive) that makes any art lover swoon or you can upload your own family photos or photos of pieces done by your kids for an endless selection of favorite art for your walls. I love that I can rotate between favorite pieces by VanGogh, Whistler, El Greco, Rosseau, Stieglitz, Renoir, Monet, Winslow Homer, or Georgia O’Keefe, a photograph from a NASA satellite, a drawing by Emily, and favorite photos from our family vacations. Meural Canvas features an ever-changing gallery that is not only a wonderful addition to any home but is a fabulous way to teach your kids art history!
Roomba 980 ($799 on Amazon)— I have to say, I love our Roomba! Easy to set up and use right out of the box and cheaper than hiring someone to clean your home, our Roomba is the helping hand I need to keep our floors clean of crumbs, dog hair, and the usual dust and dirt that comes with life. This faux leather jacket is stylish, functional, and folds quickly and easily and will probably become one thing in her wardrobe that she reaches for repeatedly.
Bristol Belt Bag from Mobovida (launches May 2)— Every once and awhile I hear about something really cool that’s coming to Kickstarter and the Bristol Belt Bag is one of those items. Bristol is a convertible bag that is made out of gorgeous premium leather and features a portable battery pack, multiple card slots, zippered pocket, key fob ring, headphone slot, and lined cell phone compartment. While the site says it’s a fanny pack, it’s really a clutch sized purse that comes with a leather strap so it can be carried hands-free or used as a cross-body bag with the gold chain. The buttery soft leather, subtle gold accents, flexibility of this bag, and the thoughtful design makes it a must-watch. Be sure to sign up for notifications on the Mobovida site to know the minute the Bristol Belt Bag Kickstarter launches so you can help fund the campaign to get one for mom!

This year wow mom with a state of the art television with a huge screen with a more beautiful picture that she’ll think you paid a lot more for. 4K TV prices have dropped considerably since being introduced and the 55″ RCA 4K LED TV is a steal at BJ’s Wholesale Club. Compression socks from VIM & VIGR ($32.95 and up)— While socks as a gift might not be so well received by others, athletes know how therapeutic they can be to energize your legs, alleviate achiness and heaviness, prevent swelling, and aid in muscle recovery after a long run or workout. Typical compression grade legwear is less than cute but thankfully Vim & Vigr’s line of graduated compression socks are not only scientifically designed to support your legs but they come in darling patterns and an array of fabrics.
