With a 5th grader in the house, middle school is on our minds. It’s comforting to know that Emily will be going to our neighborhood middle school with many of the same friends she’s attended school with for the past six years but there are certainly going to be new challenges for her ahead such as seven class periods in a day with seven different teachers, making it from one class to another in a short four minutes, and lockers. Oh the lockers!
Middle school presents enough challenges to cause any student a bit of anxiety but we’re loving Public School Superhero that’s a perfect read for any tween. Written by James Patterson (author of popular books such as House of Robots, Treasure Hunters, and series that include the Middle School books and I Funny and I Even Funnier), Public School Superhero begins as Kenny Wright (aka Stainlezz Steel) starts middle school.
In reality, Kenny is a chess club devotee known as a “Grandma’s Boy,” a label that makes him an easy target for bullies but in his mind, is Stainlezz Steel, super-powered defender of the weak. Kenny’s goal is to bring a little more Steel to the real world but the question is whether he can recognize his own true strength before succumbing to peer pressure that could result in him making the worst choice of his life at his urban middle school.
Patterson’s newest illustrated novel provides a funny, yet poignant look at middle school as Kenny and his alter ego, Stainlezz Steel, are confronted with difficult everyday decisions that will make any tween stop and think about what they might do in a similar situation.
