WebKinz Week: Parent Feedback

March 5, 2008 By Leticia

WebKinz Week on Tech Savvy Mama continues!

As I mentioned yesterday, we are a WebKinz-free household. Little Miss Techie has not caught on to the WebKinz phenomenon as other children her age, and older, have. Since we don’t have any of the friendly furry creatures in our home, and therefore no access to WebKinz World, I asked parents from the DC Urban Moms listserv to share their experiences with WebKinz to help us answer Elise’s question.

Susan of Washington, D.C has a 7 year old daughter who owns 11 WebKinz. She admits to being skeptical about them being “gateway drugs” at first but has found that she doesn’t have to limit her daughter’s time on the computer since she doesn’t want to be online constantly. Susan says WebKinz has provided teachable moments that have given her opportunities to talk about password protection and the difference between controlled vocabulary chat and open chat. WebKinz chats are controlled since children can only choose words that are in their dictionary and pick from a selection of stock phrases to say to each other.
When she is online, Susan says her daughter enjoys

playing the arcade games, doing the Gem Hunt in the Curio Shop, and “shopping” for her animals. She also confesses to logging on and playing games to help her daughter win KinzCash. For anyone who is wondering, Susan is partial to Cash Cow. Susan says, “Like it or not, we live in a wired world, and I believe it’s healthy to expose children to it.”
Olivia, the mother of a 4 year old WebKinz owner in Upper Marlboro, MD, thinks is a great idea and says WebKinz world has built in controls that “discourage prolonged play.” Olivia says although there are many activities available for children to complete, there are restrictions where lots of activities can only be played once a day. For example, owners “can get their WebKinz a “job” but once they complete a job or fail a job, they can’t come back to the employment center for another 8 hours.” However, there are mini-games that can be played continuously in order to earn KinzCash. Olivia says, “The site boils down to playing games to make “money,” spending money in the store on food for the WebKinz and housewares and toys and taking care of them (through baths, laying them down for naps and playing games.”
Cindy, of Fairfax, VA, has two children (an almost 8 year old daughter and 9 1/2 year old son) who love WebKinz. Her daughter got her first WebKinz for her 7th birthday and now owns 27 of them. Cindy says, “She likes it when she gets a new pet to adopt and has to think of a name. A present ends up in her dock for the new pet and it’s fun to open it and see what they get. She also enjoys decorating their rooms, doing the games to win KinzCash, spinning the “Wheel of Wow” every day and visiting the “Charm Forest.”
Cindy describes games as educational since WebKinz World includes math and social studies games geared to specific age ranges. She does not believe that WebKinz leads to internet addiction. Her children have to ask permission to use the computer and she limits and monitors time spent on the computer.

Rhea (Gaithersburg, MD) told me that she originally avoided WebKinz as a Christmas present for her 6 year old daughter due to skepticism. She recently gave into the phenomenon for her birthday and said even though the entire WebKinz site might not be mentally stimulating, it is a fun environment where kids can learn. She has been pleasantly surprised by the trivia question area where owners answer age appropriate questions about various topics. Rhea divulged that her “daughter happily answered 50 Math trivia questions so she could “earn” more money (KinzCash).”

Elise’s Reader Mail Monday question asked if WebKinz could be a gateway to internet addiction.
Cindy doesn’t think that WebKinz can lead to internet addiction. Susan was originally concerned about the amount of time her daughter would be online but found her she doesn’t want to participate in WebKinz World constantly. Olivia mentioned that some games only enable owners to play them once every eight hours but others can be played non-stop.

While it appears that WebKinz have built in some controls into WebKinz World to prevent children from spending obscene amounts of time on the computer in their pet’s online world, WebKinz does serve as an entry into imaginary world games and massive multi-player online role playing games (MMORPG).

What are MMORPGs?  Should I worry about them?

Worry, no. Probably not at this point in time if your elementary school aged child is enjoying WebKinz World.

But absolutely be aware of them especially if your children are engaged in WebKinz World. You may find your child in WebKinz World today and World of Warcraft tomorrow.

Check back again tomorrow when I discuss MMORPGs and the potential dangers of imaginary world games so you can know what the future holds after WebKinz World.

Hey Leticia! Patrick got a Webkinz for Christmas and guess who got totally addicted? ME! He does like mining for gems and feeding his pets, but I am the one playing the games and decorating my cute little rooms. And maybe even buying more pets. Oops!

Today we’re celebrating National Rescue Dog Day Today we’re celebrating National Rescue Dog Day because we’re so glad Goldie and Murphy are part of our family! 🐶 We gave Goldie her forever home when she was 6 months old. She had been given up by her original family because she was just too much for them. She was an enthusiastic pup who loved to jump straight up in the air when she got excited and she used to hop the fence in the mornings to go visit her best dog friend, Katy, over our back fence. She still jumps from standing when she sees a deer, meets a favorite dog friend, or gets a visit from @lisatasch but now at age 5, she’s more calm and forever faithful. 🦮We met Murphy and his 9 brothers and sisters just days after he was born although we didn’t know he would be the puppy we’d claim as ours. Murphy has that puppy energy but in his quiet moments is a total love bug. He hogs the free space in our king bed (he even has his own pillow!) and loves nothing more than to press his body into me or lie directly on me. 🐾 Goldie and Murphy came to us through @labrescuelrcp and we couldn’t be happier that they’re part of our family! ❤️ #rescuedogday #labrescue #labrador #adoptdontshop
After 3 days at St. Jude Children’s Research Hos After 3 days at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, I’m leaving Memphis so very grateful to be able to support St. Jude’s mission of working to end childhood cancer. ❤️ Spending time connecting, brainstorming, and absorbing the wisdom of fellow Hero Ambassadors from around the country was inspiring because the work we do fundraising through our endurance events helps St. Jude do the incredible work they do to ensure families never receive a bill for their child’s treatment, housing, travel, or food and continue important research that will continue to reduce rates of pediatric cancer and other childhood diseases. I am so looking forward to running in Memphis again this December! 🎉 If you’ve ever thought of running a race that does so much good in the world, join me! I’d love to have you come to Memphis and run with me! Or you can always donate through the fundraising link in my bio. ❤️ #stjude #stjudeheroes #memphis #stjudedmv

When we bought our house 24 years ago, it came wit When we bought our house 24 years ago, it came with many things we didn’t love like rotted porch boards, 1 bathroom, and peeling paint (inside and out!) but it also came with things we did love like old, mature trees, crazy shaped boxwood bushes, and these spectacular peonies! 🌸 Every year when they bloom I’m so glad that these beauties conveyed with the purchase of our house and I’m glad we rebuilt our porch so we can step out our front door to admire them in their glory! 🩷#peonies #peonyseason #garden #blooms #spring
As a teacher and parent, I am well aware of the me As a teacher and parent, I am well aware of the mental health challenges our youth face and am really pleased to share that over the weekend I became certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid through the National Council for Mental Wellbeing! 🎉 I’ve always worked to build relationships with the young people in my life- whether my kids’ friends or students- and this certification has made me more mindful of the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges so I can have important and supportive conversations when symptoms first start to appear. 🗣️A big component of the training also included developing a self-care plan which is critical when supporting others. 💕 I’m so grateful to have taken this certification for free through the University of Maryland whose blended learning format (2 hours of self paced online work + 5 hour instructor led class over Zoom) was fantastic! 💻 The teacher in me really applauds the course design and I’m glad to join the 3 million+ in the U.S. certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid. 🏥 If this is something you’re interested in doing, University of Maryland has free courses on Saturdays or Sundays from 10-4pm between June-October. Swipe ⬅️ for more information, including a QR code with more information and a survey to take as part of the sign up process. And if you have any questions- leave a comment or DM me. I’m happy to help you get certified too! ❤️ #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthfirstaid #youthmentalhealth #mentalhealthawarenessmonth
