While we love our three year old Labrador, there are times when a virtual dog is far more appealing. If the kids are clamoring for a dog of their own, let them try creating and caring for a virtual best friend using the free Cube Dog iPhone app.
Last night I downloaded the app directly from my iPhone and within minutes was creating my own Cube Dog. Cube Dog allows users to create a completely customizable virtual dog by selecting various parts and colors, including 3D graphics and animations. It’s like a customizable version of the Tamagotchis from ages ago with endless possibilities.
Once your Cube Dog is created, it’s ready to play. Cube Dog runs around the screen, loves to be scratched by rubbing your finger on the surface of the phone, and even plays fetch. Cube Dog is far more accurate of a fetcher than our own dog!

The app also allows users to photograph the dog and send it via email or linked social networking accounts such as Facebook or Twitter. While this is a neat feature that some kids would enjoy doing with their friends from their parents’ phones, just like any photo taken with a smartphone, the Cube Dog photos are embedded with geotags, information that includes GPS coordinates that is automatically added to photos.

| This geotag data was pulled from the Cube Dog photo taken from my iPhone using my graphics program but I’ve stripped it of it’s most telling information. |
Uploading smartphone photos to social networks can pinpoint locations such as your home address to strangers following you on Twitter and while this isn’t a unique feature of Cube Dog, it’s something to be aware of whenever uploading pictures taken on any smartphone, whether on a blog, social network, or even as an email attachment. Many phones allow you to turn off the geotag feature in the preferences or settings.

Cube Dog can be just as fun to play with without using the upload feature. Pictures can be taken just for fun of the dog doing cute digital things like showing its love for you with its head surrounded by flying hearts and the fact that it’s engaging and always different keeps play interesting…Just like with a real dog!
This week Cube Dog is running a fun contest on their Facebook Fan Page until Friday, June 13. Become a fan of Cube Dog on Facebook to see what’s going on!
While Cube Dog provided me with the app to review, the opinions I’ve expressed here are solely my own and represent my honest viewpoint. Cube Dog, Clever Girls Collective and I promote Blog With Integrity.
