With summer vacation on the horizon, put a camera in the hands of your budding shutterbug and allow them to record their own memories of the trip. They will love the freedom of taking their own pictures and adding an alternate perspective to the family scrapbook but before you go out to buy a camera, consider both used or new depending on your child’s age and budget.
My weekly LeapFrog Community column containing shopping tips on digital cameras for kids and links to great resources on how to teach beginning photography!
Regardless of whether you buy new or used, have a conversation with your child about it before they are allowed to use it and be sure to do the following:

Mabel’s Labels for your camera! |
- Label your camera. Kids misplace things and even if you haven’t spent a lot of money on your child’s camera, you probably want it to come back to you if it is lost. We like Mabel’s Labels on all of our belongings because they are bright, colorful, highly durable, and easy to spot at a distance. The Colorful Skinny Minis are the most used and if you need a discount, just ask via the comments! As a Mabel’s Labels BuzzMama, I have a couple 20% off codes left!
- Invest in rechargeable batteries and talk about conservation. Turning the camera on and off wastes batteries. There’s nothing worse than a dead camera battery when you need it most and your child will quickly learn the same lesson.
- Discuss appropriate times to use the camera. When our kids first got their new-to-them cameras, they wanted to use them all the time. Talk about when it is and isn’t appropriate to take photos and respecting those who don’t’ want their picture taken.
- Provide some beginning photography tips. You don’t have to have professional level skills to teach your child a few things. DigitalPhotographySchool.com has a wonderful quick read of a resource called 13 Lessons to Teach Your Child about Digital Photography. While all of the lessons may not apply now, it’s great to have a starting point for this life-long skill.
I am a weekly columnist for The LeapFrog Community but am not required to cross post or share my writing with readers of my personal blog. I personally purchase Mabel’s Labels and as a Mabel’s Labels Buzzmama, I also receive product as incentive for sharing the labels I love with everyone I know.

Labeling is such a great idea and I love Mabel’s Labels. My own kids have left cameras/cell phones at school and thank goodness they weren’t lost, but we didn’t have labels on them. I didn’t know about Mabel’s Labels yet!
My girls both use the cameras we have, but tend to use the mobile camera much more. They took a photography class and it really helped them. This is a good starting point article though! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for giving me a great idea to start with my little one. I label everything but never thought of labeling our electronics. I’ll need to do that right away. I can’t wait to see what my little one catches.
