Dinosaur Train’s Dinosaur Big City Premieres Today on PBS

August 22, 2011 By Leticia

If your kids can name all of the dinosaurs and the prehistoric time periods thanks to Dinosaur Train, then chances are they’re looking forward to Dinosaur Big City, the Dinosaur Train movie that will air on PBS Kids today. Check your local listings to determine what time you will be able to join Buddy and the Pternadon Family on their journey to the Dinosaur Big City!

If you’re new to Dinosaur Train, it’s one of our favorites. Each of the 30 minute shows features Buddy, a Tyrannosaurus Rex, and the Pteradon Family journeying through prehistoric time periods on the Dinosaur Train. I love that each episode encourages scientific thinking and other skills as they teach children about natural science, natural history, and paleontology.

This means that my kids know the difference between a therapod and quadraped and can pronounce words like palaeobatrachus and parasaurolophos and identify them when we visit the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C which is very cool but means I am constantly being corrected by them! If you need a little help with the pronunciation, check out the video below:

The one hour premiere of Dinosaur Big City kicks off the start of the second season of Dinosaur Train. Here’s some additional information about the movie from The Jim Henson Company and PBS:

Buddy and his Pteranodon family embark on a journey on the Dinosaur Train, gathering all their theropod friends together to travel to a really big Theropod Club Convention, which is being held in Laramidia, the “Dinosaur Big City.” Among the travelers is King Cryolophosaurus, a singing theropod who is more than a little nervous about giving a concert in front of his biggest audience ever in the Big City.

Once the Dinosaur Train arrives in Laramidia, Buddy and the Pteranodon family explore the crowded “dinosaur metropolis.” At the Theropod Convention, the kids reunite with Annie Tyrannosaurus and her parents Delores and Boris, and they all meet the multi-horned mayor, Mayor Kosmoceratops. In the end, Buddy and Tiny help King Cryolophosaurus overcome his stage fright, and he wows a large dinosaur audience when he sings his new song, “Whole Lotta Theropods” at the Convention.

Check your local listings to determine what time you will be able to join Buddy and the Pternadon Family on their latest journey!

We love the Dinosaur Train site on PBSKids.org as much as the show itself. If you’re like us and have a soon-to-be kindergartener in your house, the Dinosaur Train site is full of fun learning activities. Here are some great things as you eagerly anticipate the start of the school year:
  • Practice reading and speaking. Help your child practice the letters of the alphabet while learning, speaking and singing about the diversity of dinosaurs that once lived on Earth with the “Dinosaurs A – Z song” and have fun learning about letters and dinosaurs.
  • Learn about color. Help your child understand, investigate and make predictions about the science of color, using household basics including food coloring, clean food jars/containers, colored markers and a cookie sheet with this activity about colorful hypotheses.
  • Develop fine motor skills such as coloring; cutting; drawing; buttoning; zippering; building. With Buddy’s help, you can practice some of these skills while making a Stegosaurus Puppet.
  • Practice gross motor skills such as running, jumping and throwing. Try “Playing Dino Ball Your Way” to improve these skills–and get some exercise too–by inventing the rules for an imaginary game and then playing it!
  • Explore size and scale. Using illustrations and physical markers, kids can measure out size differences in large dinosaurs to understand their size and scale! Check out the activity “Even Bigger than T.Rex!” at the following link and have some fun while learning about size.
Just in time for back to school shopping, did you know that Dinosaur Train fans can also show their love with Dinosaur Train Apparel?

We recently got a sample of the new Kids with Character set that contained a button down shirt, ringer T, and coordinating shorts and Captain Computer loved his new outfit! Super cute, affordable, and durable enough to withstand lots of pretend dinosaur play!

Dinosaur Train apparel is now available at Kohl’s and KMart. Check out this PJ set on sale for $13.50- marked down from $30!

I received a clothing set for review purposes and was invited to host a Dinosaur Big City viewing party. No additional compensation was received for this post and all opinions are my own and those of my two huge Dinosaur Train fans! Images courtesy of PBS.

My best advice to parents of college students? Whe My best advice to parents of college students? When they say “you should come” - GO! ✈️

Over the last 4 years it’s been so wonderful to be invited for glimpses of Emily’s life on campus. I’ve been welcomed by her amazing friends who have become part of our family, met the professors, faculty & staff she talks so fondly of, and gotten to know fellow parents through trips to Family Weekend all while enjoying time with my best girl. 💕

Today I’m heading home as a proud mom with a full heart for all that I’ve experienced on campus during her college years and am in disbelief I’ll be back for graduation next week. 🥹

I continue to be in awe that we put something in space that existed up there for 5 months. 🥰 Our CubeSat took photos 📸 and tweeted 🐦‍⬛them out as we hoped it would thanks to the many students (and parents!) who have been involved in our meaningful real-world hands-on STEM project that enabled them to learn about technology and space over the past 11 years.

I found some old notes from a 2015 meeting and under Questions, I wrote: “If we are successful, would we do this again?”

And the answer is yes! 🎉 Here’s to SilverSat 2.0 and involving more kids to dream up a new mission for our next Silver Spring CubeSat! 💕

Happy #MedalMonday to everyone who ran a race over Happy #MedalMonday to everyone who ran a race over the weekend and is adding new race bling to their collection! 🎉 I did a thing this weekend too but it didn’t involve another race! 😂Here’s the before, swipe ⬅️ for the after!

Inspired by seeing @allytbrett_runs ’s race medals, I did a little medal reorg that makes my OCD self happy. 🙌🏼Pro tip- Instead of sliding the bar of the medal rack through the ribbon, I looped the ribbon around the bar so all the medals face forward! This small thing made a huge difference and makes me happy every time I walk into my office!💕

My next race is the 25th anniversary @stjude Memphis Marathon Weekend on December 5th. I’m thinking this anniversary year medal will be the start of a new medal rack, just like my 15th anniversary medal started this collection.🫶🏼

If you want to run Memphis with me, race registration is open! Comment Memphis and I’ll DM you the registration link and happy to answer any and all race ❓s!

Here’s to the most amazing coaches, fellow members becoming friends outside the studio, planning my work schedule around workouts, showing up for class on days I’d rather not just to avoid paying the cancellation fee (IYKYK), and continuing to count classes because I’m coming for you 1000! 💪🏼

WE did this Team Orangetheory! 🧡Thank you for joining me in fundraising, training, and running for St. Jude as charity runners! You showed yourselves what was possible outside the studio when you put your hard work inside to the test and made a difference for St. Jude kids and families. 🫶🏼

THANK YOU! Already excited for our studio to @runrocknroll DC next year!

Race medals are great but charity bling is better! Race medals are great but charity bling is better! 🏅When I first started running for @stjude 10 years ago, I thought I’d be one and done but here I am- 15 races later and having raised almost $50,000! 🎉

The goal has always been to help end childhood cancer and I feel so fortunate to have met the most amazing people along the way. My fellow @stjudedc Hero Ambassadors are a group of dedicated baddies who I adore. 🥰

We cheer for each other on and off the course and as my friend & fellow DC Hero Ambassador @jess_santora says, “My goal was never just to reach the finish line- it was to help more people get there too.” 🏃🏻‍♀️

Here’s to more races, more money raised for St. Jude, and forever friendships! Already excited (and fundraising) for St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend this December. ✨Fundraising link in bio and donations of any amount are appreciated to help me reach my $4,000 goal! 🙏🏼

When Team @otfsilverspring gets out of the studio When Team @otfsilverspring gets out of the studio for @runrockandroll DC! 🎉 Today 20 of us got out from under the orange lights and crushed 5Ks and half marathons to benefit @stjude kids and families as St. Jude Heroes.💪🏼

I am so proud of each and every one of us and especially incredibly grateful that OTFSS members said yes to running today! 🥰

We fundraised, trained, and ran to give families hope that their kids will survive childhood cancer and to support researchers as they work towards a cure for childhood cancer and other life threatening diseases. 💕

As a mom of 2, I know no parent should ever have to hear “your child has cancer” so thank you Team OTFSS for supporting St. Jude’s mission by running the streets of DC! We did it and I’m already looking forward to next year’s RNR DC race so we can do it again!🧡🧡🧡
