Learning to read is engaging and interactive with the LeapFrog’s LeapSchool Reading cartridge game. As a former first grade teacher who taught kids to read, I know how difficult it can be for young children. Concepts like letter recognition, phonics, rhyming, word families, sight word recognition, and more need to come together to read fluently.
While these things are taught in the classroom, I always feel like there’s more I need to be doing with Captain Computer in order to help him be a more confident reader. He knows his upper and lower case letters and the sounds they make, we play rhyming games in the car, he’s great at reading environmental print, and he practices spelling words in word families with common endings like –at and –an.
But sometimes he shuts down. After a day in kindergarten, he doesn’t want mom, dad, or his big sister quizzing him. Sometimes he just wants to chill out with our LeapPad and play along with fun friends that make reading fun thanks to LeapSchool Reading.
With LeapSchool reading, Captain Computer engages with fabulous educational content that contributes to his reading skills. He loves playing along with the 12 LeapSchool kids because each has different interests. They guide young readers through experiences that contribute to fostering their literacy through game play.
Kids start out with some simple games to practice using the stylus. The cartridge guides them through catching Gig’s runaway hamsters and slicing boards with Sam, a way to practice writing horizontal and vertical lines. With each game that is played with one LeapSchool character, others are unlocked. This provides a natural progression for children who are learning to read. Children are challenged in a gradual way but receive plenty of support and positive feedback through game play. There are also many opportunities to self-correct on the way towards mastery.
Summary: LeapFrog’s LeapSchool Reading is great for all types of readers because it provides many opportunities to practice skills. Children will enjoy reading with fun characters as they become more confident readers.
