Xbox 360 with Kinect: Family Settings Keep Kids Safe While Learning (giveaway)

November 28, 2011 By Leticia

Since its debut just over a year ago, Kinect for Xbox 360 has transformed the landscape of gaming with the introduction of interactive elements that recognize voice and full body movement for a truly interactive experience.  With recent announcements that Xbox is focusing on “playful learning,” it becomes a tool for learning in a fun way. If you’re thinking about getting an Xbox for your home this holiday season, new content makes it a fabulous educational tool while a newly released dashboard for parental controls helps keep your kids safe while gaming and learning.

Kinect for Xbox 360 as an Educational Tool

As a teacher, I’ve always believed that children learn best when information is presented in a variety of ways. Some children absorb information through listening, others need to read and write in order for knowledge to stick, and certain kids need to immerse themselves in the experience in order to learn by doing.

Since there is no one right or wrong way to learn, Kinect for Xbox 360 provides another avenue for learning.  While gaming promotes cooperation and communication and the Kinect promotes physical movement, new partnerships with trusted educational brands such as Sesame Street and National Geographic promotes interactive learning. Children can practice the alphabet and numbers with Grover, read a book along with Cookie Monster in Once Upon a Monster, and pretend to be a bear by playing Kinectimals Now with Bears.
Xbox 360 is also filming a season of interactive shows in partnership with Sesame Street production, bringing a whole new level of interactivity to educational television with “Kinect Sesame Street TV.” With interactive versions of shows from the current television season, new content written and filmed just for Kinect and access to classic clips from the “Sesame Street” archive, “Kinect Sesame Street TV” is bringing educational television to life.

Parental Controls Keep Kids Safe while Gaming and Learning

As we enter the holiday season when everyone is buying new technology, this new video reminds families to use Family Settings that serve as the hub for parental controls. Xbox features safety features built into the game console, such as game ratings, setting limits on time, and the ability to restrict online access.

With the new dashboard, it’s easier than ever to locate Family Settings.

The new Xbox dashboard puts Family Settings front and center
One resource that I find myself turning to is Microsoft’s GetGameSmart.com, a site that  “is designed to help families enjoy video games and online media in ways that are safer, healthier and more balanced.”  It also provides a wealth of resources that can be downloaded and printed since they are must-reads for new Xbox owners.  Helpful documentation includes:
  • Your Guide to Using Parental Controls
  • How to use The Xbox 360 Family Timer
  • Ways to restrict online access through Xbox Live 101
  • Guide to Using Game Ratings
Win an XBox 360 with Kinect courtesy of Microsoft!

The most exciting part of bringing it home is that the kids have wanted it for so long, and with money as tight as it is, it is just another thing on the wish list. This would make it a reality! This is @dublrs on Twitter

If I would win a xbox I know I kids would flip because they have been wanting to try out Just Dance games. To keep them safe I only let theym play when I’m watching them and when Daddy is around to connecting everything =]

What thrills me about the xbox kinect (besides it being insanely cool) is the parental controls – I spend a lot of time setting timers in my house for kids on electronics, it would be nice to set this up once and be done. I also love that there are no controllers! I will not miss picking up other gaming system controllers off the floor, couch, ottoman and putting them away. Also, I will absolutely not miss the insane amount of AA batteries we go through in this house.

What most excites me about bringing home an Xbox with Kinect is seeing the kinds of physical freedom my kids would have in being active AND playing video games at the same time! (and by the way, my 4yo was glued to the computer screen as soon as Cookie Monster came one. well played!) 😉

The parental control I would *definitely* be implementing right away would be to limit how long each family could use the system each day/week. It’s very important to me that a gaming system like this be used in moderation, and only after everything else – homework, chores, etc – is done!

I’m SO stoked about Kinect and my kids, having them MOVE while playing a game, sparking imagination, music, movies… really I don’t think there is a server big enough to handle all the things I could put in this comment!

I watched Cookie Monster video besides being cute it was very informative. I like how there are so many choices- how long/who can connect to what and what games could be played. That would prevent a game being borrowed from someone else and be played if it was something you didnt approve of, or especially getting online without supervision.

I love that it senses your BODY. With the Wii, it senses the remote control. The Kinect is awesome — and family settings/parental controls?! Yes. I realized how extremely valuable and necessary those are when my 6 year old was clicking around on my iPad and ended up on some very *questionable* content. Embarrassing!! I would definitely use the rating settings as well as time constraints!

I’m not sure I’m in favor of playing instruments via an Xbox, but some of the other applications in the first video are amazing. If I’m going to bring a video game system into my home, I want to know that it’s something with broad applications. I like how the Kinect allows families to play together and the variety of games is encouraging. My son already loves computer games and the Kinect will ate least get him moving!

I also love the timer part of the parental controls. My kids would stop “not noticing” the timer beeped!

I also have a son who is 14 and that age category thinks nothing of being on the games for hours at a time. I watched the videos, and I love the one about improvements in technology. Personally, I like the feature that allows parents to control the time spent on the device because honestly children today are given unlimited time on gaming and it not only hurts their studies but also stunts their own development in creative thinking.

I love everything about Xbox with Kinect, and knowing there is parental controls is just awesome! We as a family really love playing games together, and Xbox with Kinect could take us to a whole new level! It would be so much fun for us, and give us great family quality time. I also love how there are games for preschoolers, too! My son has been begging for an Xbox, and we just can’t afford it right now. I know that he and my daughter would be over-joyed if we got one!

I watched the first video – I loved when they showed the boy doing physical therapy with it as a video game – that is awesome.

I’m most excited about a kinect to actually help with exercising. I want the experience of not having to hold a controller or strap one to my leg, etc to exercise along with the video games. My teenage son and I both are focusing on losing weight so this would be perfect for each of us to use on our own time.

What excites me the most is the sensor that allows you to play without a controller! I also thought it was interesting that you can use the parental controls to limit the amount of time spent using it on a daily or weekly basis.

And I loved Cookie Monster’s PSA. 😉 Not a world without cookies!!!

    Thank you for the giveaway!

Today we’re celebrating National Rescue Dog Day Today we’re celebrating National Rescue Dog Day because we’re so glad Goldie and Murphy are part of our family! 🐶 We gave Goldie her forever home when she was 6 months old. She had been given up by her original family because she was just too much for them. She was an enthusiastic pup who loved to jump straight up in the air when she got excited and she used to hop the fence in the mornings to go visit her best dog friend, Katy, over our back fence. She still jumps from standing when she sees a deer, meets a favorite dog friend, or gets a visit from @lisatasch but now at age 5, she’s more calm and forever faithful. 🦮We met Murphy and his 9 brothers and sisters just days after he was born although we didn’t know he would be the puppy we’d claim as ours. Murphy has that puppy energy but in his quiet moments is a total love bug. He hogs the free space in our king bed (he even has his own pillow!) and loves nothing more than to press his body into me or lie directly on me. 🐾 Goldie and Murphy came to us through @labrescuelrcp and we couldn’t be happier that they’re part of our family! ❤️ #rescuedogday #labrescue #labrador #adoptdontshop
After 3 days at St. Jude Children’s Research Hos After 3 days at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, I’m leaving Memphis so very grateful to be able to support St. Jude’s mission of working to end childhood cancer. ❤️ Spending time connecting, brainstorming, and absorbing the wisdom of fellow Hero Ambassadors from around the country was inspiring because the work we do fundraising through our endurance events helps St. Jude do the incredible work they do to ensure families never receive a bill for their child’s treatment, housing, travel, or food and continue important research that will continue to reduce rates of pediatric cancer and other childhood diseases. I am so looking forward to running in Memphis again this December! 🎉 If you’ve ever thought of running a race that does so much good in the world, join me! I’d love to have you come to Memphis and run with me! Or you can always donate through the fundraising link in my bio. ❤️ #stjude #stjudeheroes #memphis #stjudedmv

As a teacher and parent, I am well aware of the me As a teacher and parent, I am well aware of the mental health challenges our youth face and am really pleased to share that over the weekend I became certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid through the National Council for Mental Wellbeing! 🎉 I’ve always worked to build relationships with the young people in my life- whether my kids’ friends or students- and this certification has made me more mindful of the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges so I can have important and supportive conversations when symptoms first start to appear. 🗣️A big component of the training also included developing a self-care plan which is critical when supporting others. 💕 I’m so grateful to have taken this certification for free through the University of Maryland whose blended learning format (2 hours of self paced online work + 5 hour instructor led class over Zoom) was fantastic! 💻 The teacher in me really applauds the course design and I’m glad to join the 3 million+ in the U.S. certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid. 🏥 If this is something you’re interested in doing, University of Maryland has free courses on Saturdays or Sundays from 10-4pm between June-October. Swipe ⬅️ for more information, including a QR code with more information and a survey to take as part of the sign up process. And if you have any questions- leave a comment or DM me. I’m happy to help you get certified too! ❤️ #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthfirstaid #youthmentalhealth #mentalhealthawarenessmonth
