Celebrate Black History Month with Romare Bearden at Macy’s

If I could rewind back to my college days, I would want to dive into a study of the life and art of Romare Bearden as part of my art history major. I fell into a double major (psychology and art history) in college just because I loved learning about art and the people behind the works.

Bearden was an individual whose art I got to know through a friend but whose work I immediately gravitated towards.  Little did I know he was a Renaissance man whose interests included music, history, literature, performing arts, and art from around the world but also served as a mentor for young artists.  He led a fascinating life and is considered one of the most influential American artists of African-American heritage.
 
This February at stores nationwide as part of Black History Month.  Select Macy’s locations around the country are hosting in-store celebrations and family friendly events designed for you to get to know this incredible individual through his art.
 
Here’s some information about upcoming events in honor of Romare Bearden:

Preview a satellite exhibit of Romare Bearden’s artwork.  View watercolors, prints, oil on paper and dramatic black and white Photostats that date from 1964 to 1984 when Romare Bearden was at the peak of his artistic power.  In addition to works on loan from the Foundation are new works by artists inspired and influenced by Bearden’s life and legacy.   

During the reception a new generation of jazz musicians will perform Bearden’s music which has been previously recorded by Branford Marsalis, Tito Puente and Billy Eckstine.     

Additional in-store celebrations will include children’s collage-making events, special readings of Bearden’s children’s book, “Li’l Dan, The Drummer Boy: A Civil War Story,” as well as cooking demonstrations from local chefs featuring Bearden’s favorite recipes and Caribbean dishes from the out-of-print cookbook, “Ma Chance’s French Caribbean Creole Cooking,” which he illustrated.
