Ruckus Reader: Interactive Content Provides Real Time Child Progress Reports (w. iPad giveaway)

April 24, 2012 By Leticia

Sometimes do you wonder how much your child really knows?  Little Miss Techie has always been one proud to show off what she knows but Captain Computer is a little more covert in his knowledge and skills.  He’s not one who loves flash cards, says he’s too tired to read to me at bedtime (or after school, early in the morning, etc.), and can sense an assessment- formal or informal- a mile away.  So what do you do when your child won’t show what they know and you know they know more than they’re showing?  Look to trusted tools that can provide you with feedback about their learning.
Last week Ruckus Media launched their new Ruckus Reader, an innovative learning program for the iPad that features digital storybooks that provide parents with personalized feedback on their child’s reading experience.
New Ruckus Reader from  Ruckus Media
Designed to help preschoolers through second graders practice important reading skills and develop a love of reading with characters they love, it also provides a snapshot of what your child is learning. Weekly Reader Meter e-mail reports and an online dashboard with additional details about your child’s reading progress provide insight into phonics and word recognition, print awareness, fluency, alphabetic knowledge, sequencing, and story comprehension. All results are aligned to Common Core Standards(important to this teacher mom!) and provide a snapshot of your child’s progress. Since they’re in real time, there’s never a wait to get the information you need about your child’s learning.
Weekly Ruckus Reader emails provide a snapshot of reading progress

Simply put, Ruckus Reader is my new secret weapon in figuring out exactly how much Captain Computer knows!  Captain Computer loves learning through the iPad and tends to balance his Angry Birds obsession with time reading stories featuring favorite characters. Thanks to Ruckus Reader, he can select favorite stories featuring well-loved characters as well as activities designed to appeal his learning style.

Ruckus Reader draws upon content with the The Wiggles, Curious George, Hasbro’s My Little Pony and Transformers and includes experiences to meet all learning styles.  There’s content for the creative learner, the science lover, the math, and the music enthusiast developed in conjunction with brands such as PBS Kids, Crayola, SeaWorld, Dino Dan, Cyberchase, and VeggieTales.  Up to 4 accounts can be set up for various members of the family. Each child can keep their own library of books that are just right for them but there’s only one financial transaction for parents to manage.
Example of the Ruckus Reader bookshelf

Using Ruckus Reader

To use Ruckus Reader, Captain Computer simply taps on the icon to unlock content on the bookshelf that includes over 40 different titles.  Upon selecting a book, Ruckus Reader automatically provides the right book at the right time to minimize frustration and to make the reading experience fun.  The customized user interface features three different reading levels, appropriate for emergent, beginning and independent readers and integrated, age-appropriate learning activities and games within the context of each story further the plot.
I love that the bookshelves serve as a safe and interactive learning environment with lots of engaging interactive content.  Learning games like tapping on things that are wrong with the picture and integrated word hunts enhance the reading experience but also help provide parents with a better picture of what their child knows. High definition video clips are integrated into titles to help illustrate points develop further understanding which is especially useful in nonfiction titles like Sea World’s Shark Goes to the Doctor.
With 15 award-winning, best-selling children’s books available in eBook form now and plans to add 20 new titles and activities to the Ruckus Reader library every month, there’s never a shortage of content for our sneaky kindergartner!
While all this great content and feedback, it may seem that Ruckus Reader is expensive but it isn’t.  Start with the free version and if you choose to sign up, you can upgrade to other types of experiences.  Apps prices range from being free to $3.99 each.  Parents can elect to pay $5.99 for a subscription to a single bookshelf, or $24.99 for 6 months of unlimited content that is expected to include 500 titles by the end of 2012.

Our kindergartner is just starting to show interest in reading books on his own and he’s getting really good at sounding things out. But, he tends to just start guessing when he gets impatient.

My son has a speech impediment and medical issues so he misses school a lot. Because of all of this, he just struggles to read. Thankfully he’s got a great teacher and speech therapist who are working with him. It’d be great to have something more to help him at home.

My niece showed no interest in reading. She was OK if you read to her but on her own she wouldn’t. We had to come up with ways to make reading more fun for her. We worked out a reward system. We turned reading into a game. We didn’t push too hard if she wasn’t interested because we didn’t want her to resent it. Eventually she became interested on her own.

I am a father of 3 kids 6 and under (2, 3 & 6). My wife and I are running into the problem of spending quality time with each child 🙁 Our oldest is at that stage where she can easily get discouraged to read when encountering words that she doesn’t know or has difficulty sounding out. Our middle child is already showing interest in reading as she likes to mimic her older sister and the youngest just likes to be read to. We want to foster and encourage them all but there are only two of us and time is never on our side. Looking at the Ruckus Reader it looks like it can definitely help with the activities and content it provides to act as that “3rd parent” helping to develop their reading skills and keeping one child busy while my wife and I can spend that quality time with the other two then switch when needed 🙂 I also love the fact that Ruckus thinks about the parents too with a tool like the Reader Meter Progress Report thank you!!!

It’s almost St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend! ❤️ This will be my 6th half marathon & 9th race benefiting @stjude kids and families. 🏃🏻‍♀️As a race veteran, you’d think my goal would be to improve my time but honestly, my goals are to raise money as much money as possible and to run for those who can’t. If you haven’t already donated but would like to, see the St. Jude link in my bio to make a tax deductible donation of any amount. 🙏🏻 I’m so so close to $5,000 and with your help, I know I’ll get there! Thanks in advance for any amount you can give and get ready for lots of race related posts and stories over the next few days! Sorry not sorry! 🏃‍♀️❤️🏃‍♀️

I’ve visited historic Old Town Alexandria many t I’ve visited historic Old Town Alexandria many times but today I got to know a different side of the city by hearing little-known stories of Africans and African-Americans, both enslaved and freemen, and visiting historic sites. ⛪️ According to @j_chapman99 (founder of @manumissiontour, 4th generation Alexandrian, and Alexandria City Council Member!!) Alexandria, Virginia was one of early America’s main centers for the international and domestic slave trade. As we drove through different historic neighborhoods, the contributions by Black Americans were apparent throughout. 🏡 It was a powerful day and an excellent reminder that Black history IS Virginia history which makes it a huge part of American history! 🇺🇸 If you’re in the DC area or happen to be planning a visit to Alexandria, I highly recommend booking a tour with Manumission Tour Company to educate yourself about important historical events and individuals whose contributions to local history are just as significant as those usually mentioned in history books. 📚Huge thanks to John for making me aware of a very important part of Old Town Alexandria’s history and also to @toyotausa for inviting me to join be a part of their Steeped in History initiative. 🚘 #ToyotaPartner #ToyotaSteepedinHistory #alexandriava #blackhistory
Happy Halloween! 🎃 Before your kids head out fo Happy Halloween! 🎃 Before your kids head out for an evening of trick or treating or hanging out with friends, take 20 minutes to have important conversations about how to handle peer pressure, safety, and healthy choices. Over the weekend I spoke with @livenowfox about how you can help your kids handle peer pressure and say “NO” to potentially dangerous behaviors like underage drinking if offered a sip of alcohol. If you're not sure how to start the conversation, here's a link to the segment I did about @ask_listen_learn as part of my role as an Education Advisory Board member for @go_faar. 👻 https://www.livenowfox.com/video/1304222 #halloween #parenting #responsibility #preventunderagedrinking #take20withkids
The things I do for a shirt! 🧡 To be honest, I The things I do for a shirt! 🧡 To be honest, I love a good challenge and Hell Week is one of my favorite OrangeTheory Fitness challenges! 💀 I *might* have been a little obsessive about pre-booking my classes and gotten a little irritated when my husband thought he’d have to travel for work which would have messed with my schedule. 😂 I *may* have cancelled and booked 3 different classes on one day when this week’s work schedule got crazy. 😳 I *definitely* did not take day 2 off and rest like I had planned when a friend texted, asking if I wanted to go to class. 🤪 But it was worth it! I got my 4 Hell Week classes done in the first 4 days and earned my 6th Hell Week shirt! 🧡 And yes! I’ll be there tomorrow for day 5. Maybe I’ll take a rest day Sunday!💀 Shoutout to the all the OTFSS coaches who kept the motivation high these first 4 days when the going got tough. I appreciate you more than you know! 🧡💪🏼🧡#orangetheory #otf #hellweek #stjudeheroes #teamnuun

I grew potatoes! 🥔🥔🥔 This spring I found I grew potatoes! 🥔🥔🥔 This spring I found a bag of 9 potatoes from our @spiralpathfarm CSA I had forgotten about. Since they were sprouting, I threw them in a raised bed, covered them with dirt, and kind of forgot about them (again!) until I was cleaning out the garden this weekend. 🌱I saw 3 potatoes sticking up out of the dirt and was amazed at how many potatoes came from the original 9! 😍If you’ve ever wanted to try growing your own produce, potatoes are a great place to start! They take minimal effort and yield incredible results. Plus digging them up is like a treasure hunt! 🥔❤️🥔 #potatoes #backyardgarden #igrewthis #gardening #yum
What do you like to read? 📚My preference depend What do you like to read? 📚My preference depends on my mood but cookbooks are always a favorite and I am beyond thrilled to add the World Central Cookbook to my collection! 💕 I got my signed copy last night before hearing @chefjoseandres speak with @mehdirhasan at Sixth & I and instantly fell in love! This cookbook is full of incredible recipes from around the world that I can’t wait to make for my family. It is also full of stories I’d the amazing people and communities who have benefitted from the incredible work @wckitchen does to provide fresh meals in humanitarian, climate, and community crises around the world. 🌎 I’ve always admired Chef Andres for being so quick to go to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake to provide what people really needed- food. The work he did in Haiti was the beginning of @wckitchen and a professional culinary school in Port au Prince. 🇭🇹During my many trips to Haiti, I fell in love with the people, culture, and food. I always hoped I would run into Chef Andres there but couldn’t be happier that his book includes recipes for dishes I love like griote, soup joumou, black beans, pikliz & more! 💕 Thank you, Chef, for your dedication to helping others by providing a very basic need to those when it is needed most. 🍛 Swipe to hear Chef Andres’ rapid fire answers to Mehdi’s questions, including which restaurant of his he likes better- @jaleobyjose or @zaytinya ! 😂 #joseandres #worldcentralkitchen #humanitarian #hero #washingtondc #cookbook #whatimreading
