Father’s Day Gift Picks

June 13, 2012 By Leticia

Tick tock goes the clock as Father’s Day approaches.  If you’re without a gift and have been racking your brain about what to give the special man in your life whether he’s the father of your children, your dad, an uncle, or a grandfather, it’s time to put that Amazon Prime membership to work by ordering one of the items below that’s sure to make his day.

Handmade paracord bracelet from parachute cord

Custom Paracord Bracelet from Off Duty Gamers ($15)— If you’re looking for an affordable essential gift, you can’t go wrong with a custom paracord bracelet. This 1″ wide bracelet is made from 10 unbroken feet of type III nylon paracord that can be pulled apart.  The cord breaking strength is 550 pounds so it’s tough enough to handle all kinds of all kinds of emergency situations.  I happened to meet Off Duty Gamers founder and former Airborne paratrooper, Mark Christianson, while at E3 who happened to make me a custom bracelet on the spot.  Since wearing it, it’s been a conversation piece that has gotten many compliments from men and women alike.  Choose from a variety of different kinds of paracord through the Off Duty Gamers site.

Finally! A light PC! Asus Ultra-Portable 13.3 inch with AMD Brazos E-450
ASUS U32u-ES21 Ultra-Portable 13.3 Inch Laptop ($429.99, Amazon)— While the name may be a handful to remember and/or say, the Asus Ultra Portable Laptop is certainly easy to tote around thanks its super slim design and weight of only 4 pounds. This machine is well suited for work, gaming, social media addicts, and anyone who likes to multitask thanks to the AMD Brazos E-450 processor (1.65 GHz).  The crisp images you see on the screen translate to the television when the laptop is connected using an HDMI cable.  For any dad who appreciates good design, the brushed aluminum exterior provides a sleek exterior while the hidden hinge not only allows for additional viewing angles.  Another nice feature is the pinch and zoom feature on the trackpad that allows users to zoom in and out quickly and easily.  It also has a 10 hour battery life which I tried to exhaust while at a 4 hour E3 AMD happy hour with no luck.
If you’re going to get a vacuum as a gift, it better be a Dyson!
Dyson DC-41 ($539.99 from Amazon)— In our home, my husband is a stickler about the floors.  Luckily for me, he’s the one who vacuums!  For a guy who helps out with housework and appreciates innovative engineering and great design, Dyson is the way to go. The Dyson DC-41 Animal is the vacuum that I’ve had my eye on for awhile wondering if the high price tag was worth the hype. In short- it is!  Despite its intimidating appearance, it’s actually quite light and easy to maneuver.  The DC-41 is made of materials that are used for strength and durability while the Ball that is a prominent design feature, makes it easy to maneuver around furniture and corners. Engineer-types will also appreciate that the Ball is also the place where the motor, ducting, valves and the stand are located. Designed for hard wood floors and also carpeted surfaces, the DC-41 has an adjustable head that actually creates a seal to provide the highest suction power through the Radical Root Cyclone™.  Long bristles penetrate deep into carpet to remove ground-in dirt and pet hair while shorter bristles sweep the carpet top to remove surface dust. Allergy sufferers who are sensitive to microscopic particles of dust, pollen, and mold will appreciate that the design includes a mesh shroud that helps separate large debris. The inner cyclones generate powerful centrifugal forces to extract and capture particles while purifying the air.  If you never thought you could love a vacuum, the Dyson DC-41 Animal might just change your mind and make you love your clean floors even more. (Wow, that was the longest gift guide entry ever. Who knew it would be about a vacuum but seriously- we love our Dyson!)
If wireless is a way of life, then upload photos wireless too with Eye-Fi’s Mobile X2.
Eye-Fi Mobile X2 ($79)— Always searching for that cable to download photos? Go with the new Eye-Fi Mobile X2. The Mobile X2 automatically and wirelessly transfers photos directly from your camera to the device of your choice, such as your laptop, smartphone, or tablet. It takes mere minutes to set up Mobile X2 to work with your home wireless connection and begin uploading pictures.  The Endless Memory feature is a welcome addition for anyone who loves to take photos but frequently fills up their memory cards.  Endless Memory automatically creates space for new images so you never have to see the memory full message or scroll through previous shots, deleting ones as you go in order to create more room. Save 20% off Mobile X2 using the code BLOGMOM through the Eye-Fi mobile store.
BlackBerry die hards will love the PlayBook
BlackBerry PlayBook ($211.59-278.59 via Amazon)— Die hard Blackberry users will appreciate the 7” PlayBook running the new 2.0 OS with either 16 GB or 32 GB of storage.  The interface allows BlackBerry devices to connect seamlessly thanks to the BlackBerry Bridge.  Using your BlackBerry ID, information stored on your smartphone immediately synchs with your PlayBook and vice versa. The design of the tablet is sleek, with more square sides than iPads and other tablets but offers a crisp screen, two HD 1080p video cameras (for front and rear facing picture taking capabilities), and 1 GB of RAM.  Multitaskers will appreciate the ability to web browse, while playing games such as Angry Birds, Monopoly, and other content from AppWorld, creating content on WordPress, and staying organized with build in communication tools like the calendar, contacts, and email.
Hammerhead iPad Case with removable keyboard & stylus
Leather Bluetooth iPad 2 or 3 Case from Hammerhead ($99.99)— When it comes to iPad cases with integreated Bluetooth keyboards, my husband has discriminating tastes.  Not just any iPad case will do. He requires one that will completely protect the sides of the iPad but wants it to be stylish, have a slim profile, and feature a comfortable viewing angle.  Since not all cases are created equally, it can be a challenge to find one to fit the bill.  Hammerhead cases are made of soft pebbled leather (red or black), feature a Bluetooth keyboard, and come with a stylus. The beauty of the Hammerhead case is the removable keyboard. Most cases with keyboards have fixed keyboards but the Hammerhead keyboard can be removed and reattached thanks to Velcro on the back side, providing the ability to use it inside or outside of the case at a range of 30 feet. Velcro also allows the iPad to be positioned at multiple angles, allowing for the most comfortable viewing of the screen. Pairing the keyboard to your iPad is easy. The lithium ion battery provides 6-8 hours of keyboard usability and recharges via included USB cable.
James Bond turns 50 and celebrates with a new Blu-ray collection
Bond 50 Golden Anniversary Blu-ray Collection (preorder from Amazon, $186.28) — Guys who love Bond will appreciate you preordering Bond 50 as his Father’s Day gift in anticipation of the September 25 release.  The collection includes 22 classic films on Blu-ray neatly packaged into one cool, sleek collectable box-set. The box set also includes two all-new pieces that spotlight the history of 007 for the ultimate Bond fan including “The World of Bond” that takes a look at the style and attitude that is signature to Bond.  Think cars, women, villains and the music that have been a staple of these films for the past 50 years.  “Being Bond” profiles the six distinguished actors that have had the honor of portraying 007.
Beer Bottle Label from Pinhole Press(15 labels per order, $11.99)— Who wouldn’t want their own beer bottle labels?  I happened to stumble upon Pinhole Press and was immediately smitten by their gorgeous photo products like the beer bottle labels. I’m also a fan of the skinny horizontal Easel Desk Calendar ($24.99) for a fresh twist on the classic photo calendar or the wine bottle labels.
Stream your audio with Sonos Play 3
Sonos Play 3— This streaming audio player gives you instant access to your digital music library and streaming internet audio settings from anywhere in your house. It plays music from your home PCs and Macs, and also has the ability to stream internet radio and music from many of the popular online music services, including  Last.fm, Pandora, Rhapsody, SiriusXM, Spotify, iheartradio, and more. The Play 3 connects to your home internet connection via Ethernet, or an optional wireless bridge. Once you have one Sonos unit in the house, they have the ability to communicate between themselves and form a wireless mesh network, extending their range. If you have multiple units, you can play the same music around your entire home. The Sonos streaming music player provides high quality speakers and a great user interface for listening to your digital music collection or tapping into the Internet’s vast assortment of streaming audio. Today we’re celebrating National Rescue Dog Day Today we’re celebrating National Rescue Dog Day because we’re so glad Goldie and Murphy are part of our family! 🐶 We gave Goldie her forever home when she was 6 months old. She had been given up by her original family because she was just too much for them. She was an enthusiastic pup who loved to jump straight up in the air when she got excited and she used to hop the fence in the mornings to go visit her best dog friend, Katy, over our back fence. She still jumps from standing when she sees a deer, meets a favorite dog friend, or gets a visit from @lisatasch but now at age 5, she’s more calm and forever faithful. 🦮We met Murphy and his 9 brothers and sisters just days after he was born although we didn’t know he would be the puppy we’d claim as ours. Murphy has that puppy energy but in his quiet moments is a total love bug. He hogs the free space in our king bed (he even has his own pillow!) and loves nothing more than to press his body into me or lie directly on me. 🐾 Goldie and Murphy came to us through @labrescuelrcp and we couldn’t be happier that they’re part of our family! ❤️ #rescuedogday #labrescue #labrador #adoptdontshop
After 3 days at St. Jude Children’s Research Hos After 3 days at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, I’m leaving Memphis so very grateful to be able to support St. Jude’s mission of working to end childhood cancer. ❤️ Spending time connecting, brainstorming, and absorbing the wisdom of fellow Hero Ambassadors from around the country was inspiring because the work we do fundraising through our endurance events helps St. Jude do the incredible work they do to ensure families never receive a bill for their child’s treatment, housing, travel, or food and continue important research that will continue to reduce rates of pediatric cancer and other childhood diseases. I am so looking forward to running in Memphis again this December! 🎉 If you’ve ever thought of running a race that does so much good in the world, join me! I’d love to have you come to Memphis and run with me! Or you can always donate through the fundraising link in my bio. ❤️ #stjude #stjudeheroes #memphis #stjudedmv

When we bought our house 24 years ago, it came wit When we bought our house 24 years ago, it came with many things we didn’t love like rotted porch boards, 1 bathroom, and peeling paint (inside and out!) but it also came with things we did love like old, mature trees, crazy shaped boxwood bushes, and these spectacular peonies! 🌸 Every year when they bloom I’m so glad that these beauties conveyed with the purchase of our house and I’m glad we rebuilt our porch so we can step out our front door to admire them in their glory! 🩷#peonies #peonyseason #garden #blooms #spring
As a teacher and parent, I am well aware of the me As a teacher and parent, I am well aware of the mental health challenges our youth face and am really pleased to share that over the weekend I became certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid through the National Council for Mental Wellbeing! 🎉 I’ve always worked to build relationships with the young people in my life- whether my kids’ friends or students- and this certification has made me more mindful of the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges so I can have important and supportive conversations when symptoms first start to appear. 🗣️A big component of the training also included developing a self-care plan which is critical when supporting others. 💕 I’m so grateful to have taken this certification for free through the University of Maryland whose blended learning format (2 hours of self paced online work + 5 hour instructor led class over Zoom) was fantastic! 💻 The teacher in me really applauds the course design and I’m glad to join the 3 million+ in the U.S. certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid. 🏥 If this is something you’re interested in doing, University of Maryland has free courses on Saturdays or Sundays from 10-4pm between June-October. Swipe ⬅️ for more information, including a QR code with more information and a survey to take as part of the sign up process. And if you have any questions- leave a comment or DM me. I’m happy to help you get certified too! ❤️ #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthfirstaid #youthmentalhealth #mentalhealthawarenessmonth
