Here’s a description of how cybercriminals took advantage of unsuspecting users according to a news story posted on the FBI website:
When users of infected computers clicked on the link for the official website of iTunes, for example, they were instead taken to a website for a business unaffiliated with Apple Inc. that purported to sell Apple software. Not only did the cyber thieves make money from these schemes, they deprived legitimate website operators and advertisers of substantial revenue.
- Back up your files. Back up to either an external hard drive or a cloud based service like Mozy or Carbonite.
- Ensure that your virus protection is current. Free antivirus software is available from companies like AVG. BitDefender makes a quickscan virus scanner (scroll halfway down the page and look for the Quickscan button) that you can run for free to check your machine for viruses as needed but it’s really a good idea to always have virus protection running.
