Since science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are subjects that we love in our home, I’m passionate about sharing great STEM resources with you through this site but also through a new venture called #STEMchatOnAir, a new venture with with Kim Moldofsky from The Maker Mom. #STEMchatOnAir is going to be a monthly live chat that you can join us for Q&A or watch/listen to an archived version at your leisure at a later date via YouTube.
Our first #STEMchatOnAir will take place on Tuesday, March 25 from 2:00-2:30 PM ET and while Kim and I could talk about STEM all day long, we want to feature special guests who can lend their expertise about a specific STEM topic.
This Tuesday, March 25 we’re starting our inaugural #STEMchatOnAir with the topic of Robotics in honor of National Robotics Week (April 5-13).
We have three special guests lined up, each of whom will provide a mom’s-eye view of robotics leagues- Kelly will talk about VEX, Karen will share her experience with FIRST and Ruth will discuss the amazing things she’s doing with MATE ROV.
A bit more about our featured panelists:
Karen Smith got into Robotics like many parents do…being dragged along behind her two enthusiastic kids who are now ages 10 and 12. Last year, she coached a rookie team of Girl Scouts, all fourth graders, in their first LEGO Robotics competition where they did spectacularly mediocre and had a blast doing it. She writes science fiction for kids and thinks technology literacy should be treated as seriously as math and language learning. She makes her home in the far west Chicago suburbs and her digital home at www.karentsmith.com.
Ruth Kulmala-Repp holds degrees in medicine and bio/chem engineering but since having a stem-obsessed daughter has become an enthusiastic advocate of bringing authentic science to homeschool/gifted populations. She has spent the past two years as an AP science teacher, VEX Robotics advisor and since fall 2013, a MATE underwater ROV advisor.
Kelly Whalen is a blogger, social media consultant and tech-loving mom of four kids. She was the hook for my involvement in VEX. Read more about her on her blog, The Centsible Life.
