Even though I’m usually an all-in-moderation kind of gal, I admit there are times that I love to indulge and go on a binge-watching spree of a show I just can’t get enough of. Apparently I’m not alone given what my Facebook friends posted on my wall when I asked them about their favorite Netflix shows to stream. 66 comments resulted in a giant list of new shows to watch and reasons why they’re loved along with some flashbacks to some classics that I loved back in the day.
If you’re in a lull between show seasons and are looking for some new shows to binge watch, query your Facebook friends about their favorite things to watch via Netflix Streaming. If you don’t already use Netflix Streaming, it’s a great way to get instant content that can be watched on as many devices as you want.
Netflix’s subscription for unlimited movies and television episodes ($7.99/month) allows users to stream content over the Internet. Streaming is different from downloading. With streaming, your content is available instantly. Benefits to streaming include commercial-free programming (great for kid content!), the flexibility to pause, rewind, or fast forward as often as you want, and the ability to watch on as many devices as you want! Streaming works on your TV via a PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, through the app when on mobile devices such as an iPad, iPhone, Android Phone, or Windows phone or tablet, or watch instantly through your computer, TiVo, or Roku.
So what are the popular shows that people are watching? Here’s the laundry list of what my Facebook friends said they love streaming from Netflix for your viewing pleasure!
“We just started watching House of Cards and I am officially hooked,” revealed Monica Storch, Macaroni Kids’ Manhattan East Side guru. “I never even know there were shows exclusive to Netflix before this! Yes, I’m from the dark ages!” It’s ok, Monica! I still love you!
Tech4Moms’ Sarah Kimmel admits to being a bit cheesy with her declaration that ABC Family original movies are favorites.
Emily Vanek from ColoradoMoms loves romantic comedies and suggested Lovestruck the Musical and Crimes of Fashion.
Jeanne Sager of Inside Out likes having Babysitters Club marathons with her daughter and provides other great suggestions of classics that kids can dig into through her post: A Virtual Walk Down Memory Lane (With the Kid).
Rock and Roll Mama Lindsay Maines has been immersed in Royal Pains. She’s watched 40 episodes in 3 days and wishes she was kidding.
“My plan for the summer is to watch Scandal, Orange is the New Black, Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, and How I Met Your Mother,” revealed The Exhausted Mom’s Alexis Preito. “That will get me through three weeks, then I will have to find others!”
Deb on the Rocks’ Deb Rox and others love Orange is the New Black (OITNB). If you’re not familiar with this, Deb declares “Fantastic ensemble of women, nothing like it anywhere. Like others, she’s eagerly awaiting the start of Season 2!
Mom Advice’s Amy Allen Clark likes An Idiot Abroad.
Since she can’t watch OITNB yet, Dusty Bastian (As Mom Sees It) bides her time with Weeds. Again. She says that her strategy for Netflix Streaming involves watching shows “that we’ve recently discovered and need to catch up to the most recent season.”
“Anything Disney!” exclaimed college friends Susan Bushey Manning. “It’s a lifesaver!”
Kim Moldofsky, my #STEMchatOnAir partner in crime who blogs at The Maker Mom, admits to getting Netflix “because of Arrested Development.” She has also “marathon-watched the 7 Up series but doesn’t recommend binge watching because it’s meant to be viewed every seven years so there’s lots of repetition.” Thanks for the advice, Kim!
“Mad Men, Parenthood, Shark Tank, 80s movies…” listed Beth Feldman aka Role Mommy.
Battlestar Galactica- “the more recent TV series” keep I’m Not the Nanny’s Thien-Kim Lam up as she multitasks during late night craft sessions or works into the early hours of the morning.
Anne Parris of Midlife Boulevard prefers “British shows like the 80s Sherlock, Poirot, The ID Crowd, Luther, Foyle’s War, and the original English version of House of Cards.”
Lisa Frame of A Daily Pinch prefers Sherlock.
“Breaking Bad and Good Luck Charlie – ah, the dichotomy!” muses Dirt and Noise’s Ilina Ewen.
Laura Stewart likes Dr. Who Classic and The Andy Griffith Show. “Don Knotts is a genius!”
Little Britain, Catherine Tate Show, Lost Girl, and older movies from the 80s are Lee Reyes-Fournier’s (Couple Dumb) picks.
“I waited for weeks and weeks for Season Six of Mad Men to come out on Netflix. Then I binge watched in time for the final season premiere,” admits Nancy Friedman of From Hip to Housewife and co-founder of KidVuz.com.
5 Minutes for Mom co-founder, Susan Carraretto, believes “binge watching shows on Netflix is the best way to experience TV!” She likes watching The Good Wife and House.
“The binge watching is awesome. I love using it to catch up on TV shows that got away from me the past few years like Grey’s Anatomy,” says The Toy Queen’s Keriann Wilmot.
Mommy Niri’s Nirasha Jaganath made me promise that I wouldn’t judge her for saying Dawson’s Creek. Come on, you know you’re humming the theme song in your head too! Incidentally, others wrote that they love Niri for mentioning Dawson’s Creek!
“I love Netflix for the foreign comedies I never would have experienced without Netflix,” says Jessica McFadden of A Parent in America. She declared I Do (French title “Prête-moi ta main”) “hilarious.” She and Niri bonded over a love of Bollywood films too which she called Holly/Bolly and feature titles like Bride and Prejudice. In case you were wondering, Jessica says it’s “one of the best movies. EV.ER.”
“Friday Night Lights,” shared Glennia Campbell of The Silent I. “By the end, I wanted Coach and Mrs. Coach to be my next door neighbors.” And what might be a show to avoid? Glennia says, “I started watching Breaking Bad but was too grossed out to continue beyond the third episode.”
Mitch of Gay NYC Dad likes Netflix for “old episodes from BBC America” including Torchwood and Gavin & Stacey.
For a flashback, KidVuz’s Rebecca Levey likes to binge watch The Wonder Years with her twin girls. “Middle school is exactly the same as it was in 1968.”
“Our family has been all-things-Marvel and superhero lately,” says Nicole Brady of SAHM Reviews. “I just found out they have The Incredible Hulk and I can’t wait to watch it!”
Whew! That’s quite a list, right?
