Winter’s chill and the endless snow we seemed to get at the start of the year is a distant memory as we’re in the thick of summer’s hot and humid days. In between camp, time at the pool, completing summer packets from school, there are times where my two kids just need a break from the day’s heat on the couch streaming content from Netflix as they cool off. It’s nice to enjoy the luxury of indulging in a mid-day movie or a favorite show that we can watch on tablets when we’re on the go.
Sometimes my kids might binge watch a Disney Channel show (Phineas and Ferb and Lab Rats seem to be favorites these days) or other times they choose something from the National Geographic Kids channel. I know that not all screen time is created equally but I think there’s a healthy balance between screen time for pure fun and shows that lean towards being educational by keeping young minds active when school isn’t in session. Here are some great titles that are available through Netflix streaming that can inspire learning by keeping the mind active even during the summer.
Older learners may enjoy the following titles to help them learn more about a topic they’ve learned about in school or one they’re already interested in. Here’s some great educational content that they can stream to dive further into United States history, journey into the past, learn about our country, or indulge a fascination with space.
- Lewis & Clark: The Journey Out West
- Walking with Dinosaurs
- Secret Yellowstone
- The Blue Planet
- When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions
Young learners tend to learn best when presented with a variety of learning experiences. Interacting with materials through hands on lessons, reading about favorite topics, as well as watching content can help reinforce skills for the earliest ages. These nimated titles provide great learning experiences to activate the imagination in young learners.
- The Great Mouse Detective
- Busytown Mysteries
- LeapFrog: Math Adventures to the Moon
- Turtle: The Incredible Journey
- The Magic School Bus
School may be out, but learning doesn’t have to be so I hope the above titles can serve as a fun way to provide a summer brain-power boost to something new or a favorite topic for some learning outside of the classroom. For more brain-boosting titles, Common Sense Media has a list of 12 age-appropriate documentaries that encourage kids to explore worlds they may not normally encounter available through Netflix streaming.
This post was inspired by Netflix. No compensation was received but my family does enjoy a complimentary Netflix subscription and other items for my involvement as a Netflix Stream Team Member. Images courtesy of Netflix.
Great list—sending this to a certain 9 year old I know 🙂
Thanks! She might really like Secret Yellowstone given your recent trip and there are so many great programs that can help build background knowledge about destinations pre-travel!
When there out of school I like for my kids to watch shows that are educational and keep there minds going so they can learn. The national geographic stuff is awesome! Netflix has a great variety of these shows.
Love the National Geographic so interesting to watch
I like that they have these on there. I debated on getting rid of the netflix streaming but never thought to look for educational stuff like this. Definitely will be checking it out now.
