Any Transformers fan knows that today is the day Transformers: Age of Extinction comes out on Blu-ray but did you know that it’s the first movie mixed in for home theaters? Dolby Atmos is multidimensional sound that has become the new gold standard in cinema sound this summer thanks to the way it immerses your “mind, body, and soul” in the viewing experience. Dolby Atmos allows filmmakers to place or move specific sounds anywhere in the movie theatre, including overhead to make you feel as if they are inside the film, not merely watching it.

Dolby Atmos debuted in 2012 in the hit film Brave. Since then, it’s been used for more than 180 theatrical releases, including hits like Godzilla, Guardians of the Galaxy, Gravity, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
Why is Dolby Atmos different?
According to Dolby:
Dolby Atmos is the first audio format based on audio objects rather than channels. In Dolby Atmos, any sound- the helicopter, a blaring car horn, a yelling child- can exist as an independent audio object, free of channel restrictions. It can be placed and moved anywhere, including anywhere overhead.
Why does this matter?
According to Dolby, it changes the way we experience sound in the theater.
Filmmakers can now focus on telling the story. They can place sounds where they would occur naturally in a scene, rather than compromising the artistic intent by having to place them into channels. Sounds move in multidimensional space- flowing above and around you in step with the visuals to bring a new sense of height and reality. Dolby Atmos puts you in the middle of the action- in ways you have never before experienced. And it adapts to any playback environment- in the cinema, at home, or on the go.
Do you need to have a Dolby Atmos home theater to be able to appreciate the difference?
No. According to Dolby, even if you don’t have a Dolby Atmos home theater, content mixed in Dolby Atmos sounds better. This format gives filmmakers the tools and freedom to bring more sound off the screen and into your living room creating a more enveloping experience – it’s as if you’re actually in the movie thanks to sound that fills every corner of the room.
Where can I get Dolby Atmos home theater equipment?
If you want to upgrade your home theater sound, you can take a look at Dolby Atmos receivers and speakers on the Dolby website that are starting to appear in stores now that can provide you with overhead sound just like at the movies.
