With incredible deals appearing online, print ads in Sunday’s paper announcing sales that start on Wednesday, and photos of tents already in place at popular retailers, you’d have to live under a rock to not know Black Friday is here. Savvy consumers know that Black Friday can be an amazing time to snag deals on must-have items as long as they do their research. Black Friday has become something that’s not for the faint of heart.
While Black Friday may sound ominous or the name for a day when shopping begins in the dark, it’s actually a day that started in the 1960s. Retailers found that the Friday after Thanksgiving was a popular shopping day that tended to move their ledgers from being in the red to being in the black to signify profits made. These days 30% of annual retail sales are made during the long Thanksgiving weekend.
With 28% of consumers planning to spend more than 50% of their totally holiday shopping budgets between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Black Friday sales are often an indicator of the economy, helping predict overall holidays sales. Last year Black Friday sales increased 19% with Thanksgiving sales growing 19.7% over the previous year.
With so many amazing Black Friday deals on electronics, toys, and items for the home, it’s hard to resist shopping around Thanksgiving weekend. However, it’s also important to know how much of a deal a product really is, understand price matching policies, weight the benefits of shopping in-store versus online on Cyber Monday, and plot your course to the stores offering the biggest discounts you want to take advantage of during the day.
