DC Metro Area Readers: Make Meaning Bethesda Row Offers $9.99 Gingerbread House Decorating Benefitting Children’s Inn at NIH

December 8, 2014 By Leticia

Make Meaning Bethesda Row Gingerbread House Decorating

This is a sponsored post

“What exactly are we doing tonight, Mommy?” Emily asked as we hopped in the car again after a string of events on a busy Sunday. After a day of selling barrettes benefitting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at a local synagogue, launching her rocket with her fellow Girl Scouts, a stop at the craft store for more ribbon barrette supplies, and a bit of down time at home, we were off again. While we had had an epic day so far, I was looking forward to an evening with friends and a chance to continue our holiday tradition of gingerbread house making that didn’t involve any set up or cleanup.

In the car we talked about the new Make Meaning at Bethesda Row. For my crafty kids, the idea of a place where you can go to make soap, candles, wearable or functional glass pieces, sit down to paint pottery, or decorate cookies, was quite appealing. And so was the idea of decorating this year’s gingerbread houses using their houses and assortment of candy while doing something to benefit others.

On weekdays between December 15-January 4, 2015, Make Meaning Bethesda Row is offering Gingerbread House Decorating Activity for $9.99 per person and when you decorate your gingerbread house, you’re purchasing an activity for a child at The Children’s Inn at National Institutes of Health (NIH). Full details on this offer below.

About Make Meaning Bethesda Row

When we arrived at Make Meaning, the bright, colorful space was instantly inviting especially with a long table featuring a candy bar of assorted candy decorations far better than we ever would have at our house and novelty items.

Make Meaning Bethesda Row

Trees, reindeer, and shiny packages waiting to be used on the many undecorated gingerbread houses that served as blank canvases for our group.

As I stared at the table, the wheels in my head started turning. And so did the kids’. From the oldest middle schooler to the almost-preschooler in our group, there was plenty of candy to meet everyone’s creative needs. Since we couldn’t sit back and just let our kids have all the fun, the adults jumped in too and for an hour and a half, we let our children have their fun while we had ours.

When we stepped back to look at our masterpieces, they truly were. Each child and adult in our group had a different vision for the same candy that had been laid out on the table. White cotton candy covered entire houses or just sprinkled the cardboard base of others. Plastic reindeer awaiting Santa stood atop roofs or decorated front yards. Roofs were decorated with icing swirls, diamonds, or more traditional scallops but each featured a different candy decoration. The creativity was astounding!

Decorating Gingerbread Houses at Make Meaning Bethesda

The best part of it was when we were done, we presented our homes to the lovely staff who wrapped them up and for us to bring home. I felt a bit guilty leaving behind a pile of wreckage from the candy cane wrappers, cotton candy, and the multiple packages of gummies used but the accommodating staff assured me it was their job to clean it all up. And they did. As we headed out, candies that had rolled on to the floor and under tables was being corralled into dustpans to tidy the space for the next group.

As I walked to the car, I thought about our gingerbread house making tradition and the amount of time, money, and effort is spent shopping for candy, making the icing, decorating, and cleaning up. As much as I love the process, cleaning up dried royal icing is never fun. Outsourcing our family’s gingerbread house decorating this year was a treat and while it sounds costly, it wasn’t.

My best advice to parents of college students? Whe My best advice to parents of college students? When they say “you should come” - GO! ✈️

Over the last 4 years it’s been so wonderful to be invited for glimpses of Emily’s life on campus. I’ve been welcomed by her amazing friends who have become part of our family, met the professors, faculty & staff she talks so fondly of, and gotten to know fellow parents through trips to Family Weekend all while enjoying time with my best girl. 💕

Today I’m heading home as a proud mom with a full heart for all that I’ve experienced on campus during her college years and am in disbelief I’ll be back for graduation next week. 🥹

I continue to be in awe that we put something in space that existed up there for 5 months. 🥰 Our CubeSat took photos 📸 and tweeted 🐦‍⬛them out as we hoped it would thanks to the many students (and parents!) who have been involved in our meaningful real-world hands-on STEM project that enabled them to learn about technology and space over the past 11 years.

I found some old notes from a 2015 meeting and under Questions, I wrote: “If we are successful, would we do this again?”

And the answer is yes! 🎉 Here’s to SilverSat 2.0 and involving more kids to dream up a new mission for our next Silver Spring CubeSat! 💕

Happy #MedalMonday to everyone who ran a race over Happy #MedalMonday to everyone who ran a race over the weekend and is adding new race bling to their collection! 🎉 I did a thing this weekend too but it didn’t involve another race! 😂Here’s the before, swipe ⬅️ for the after!

Inspired by seeing @allytbrett_runs ’s race medals, I did a little medal reorg that makes my OCD self happy. 🙌🏼Pro tip- Instead of sliding the bar of the medal rack through the ribbon, I looped the ribbon around the bar so all the medals face forward! This small thing made a huge difference and makes me happy every time I walk into my office!💕

My next race is the 25th anniversary @stjude Memphis Marathon Weekend on December 5th. I’m thinking this anniversary year medal will be the start of a new medal rack, just like my 15th anniversary medal started this collection.🫶🏼

If you want to run Memphis with me, race registration is open! Comment Memphis and I’ll DM you the registration link and happy to answer any and all race ❓s!

Here’s to the most amazing coaches, fellow members becoming friends outside the studio, planning my work schedule around workouts, showing up for class on days I’d rather not just to avoid paying the cancellation fee (IYKYK), and continuing to count classes because I’m coming for you 1000! 💪🏼

WE did this Team Orangetheory! 🧡Thank you for joining me in fundraising, training, and running for St. Jude as charity runners! You showed yourselves what was possible outside the studio when you put your hard work inside to the test and made a difference for St. Jude kids and families. 🫶🏼

THANK YOU! Already excited for our studio to @runrocknroll DC next year!

Race medals are great but charity bling is better! Race medals are great but charity bling is better! 🏅When I first started running for @stjude 10 years ago, I thought I’d be one and done but here I am- 15 races later and having raised almost $50,000! 🎉

The goal has always been to help end childhood cancer and I feel so fortunate to have met the most amazing people along the way. My fellow @stjudedc Hero Ambassadors are a group of dedicated baddies who I adore. 🥰

We cheer for each other on and off the course and as my friend & fellow DC Hero Ambassador @jess_santora says, “My goal was never just to reach the finish line- it was to help more people get there too.” 🏃🏻‍♀️

Here’s to more races, more money raised for St. Jude, and forever friendships! Already excited (and fundraising) for St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend this December. ✨Fundraising link in bio and donations of any amount are appreciated to help me reach my $4,000 goal! 🙏🏼

When Team @otfsilverspring gets out of the studio When Team @otfsilverspring gets out of the studio for @runrockandroll DC! 🎉 Today 20 of us got out from under the orange lights and crushed 5Ks and half marathons to benefit @stjude kids and families as St. Jude Heroes.💪🏼

I am so proud of each and every one of us and especially incredibly grateful that OTFSS members said yes to running today! 🥰

We fundraised, trained, and ran to give families hope that their kids will survive childhood cancer and to support researchers as they work towards a cure for childhood cancer and other life threatening diseases. 💕

As a mom of 2, I know no parent should ever have to hear “your child has cancer” so thank you Team OTFSS for supporting St. Jude’s mission by running the streets of DC! We did it and I’m already looking forward to next year’s RNR DC race so we can do it again!🧡🧡🧡
