It seems like a new ‘for sale’ sign pops up each time I drive or walk down one of the streets in our neighborhood. According to Time.com, “buyers come out of the woodwork during the spring.” Not only are some looking to put tax refunds toward moving and closing costs during this peak selling time, but school is ending and families looking to relocate can use summer to get settled before a new school year begins in the fall. It’s prime time for listing homes and moving.
Whether you’re looking to make a move to a new home in your area or beyond, or even just staying put for now, here are some helpful tips on how to secure your home while selling and moving and how to keep your new home safe.
Securing Your House While Showing Your Home

Extra Large Digital Alarm Fire Safe and Portable Key Safe
After listing your home on the market, real estate agents will bring prospective buyers to see your property. A spare key kept in a portable key safe will ensure that trusted real estate agents who need to have access to see the interior of your home can get in while keeping others out. A push button device with an alpha/numerical keypad provides endless possibilities for customizable combinations to keep the keys inside safe.
If you’re showing your home while you’re still living in it, be sure to lock up any valuables or papers with personal identification. It’s best to keep them in a locking safe like the Sentry Safe SFW123TTC Extra Large Digital Alarm Fire Safe that can secure your home’s valuables while also protecting them from fire, water, and burglars in your new home.
Keeping Belongings Safe During Your Move

Sentry Safe’s Guardian Storage Box and Universal Coupler Lock from Master Lock
Tax records, family heirlooms, and photos should be placed in a large storage box. A Sentry Safe Guardian Storage Box will keep them protected from fire, water, and long-term damage from heat and humidity.
If your move requires you to rent a trailer to haul your belongings, make sure it’s securely attached with a locking mechanism that will resist picking and prying so your belongings don’t disappear. The Universal Trailer Coupler Lock is a versatile model that fits 1 7/8”- 2 5/16”
Securing Your New Crib

Satin Nickel Entry Door Lock with Single Cylinder Deadbolt and Keyed Cable Lock from Master Lock
First things first, change the locks! Who knows who had keys to your house and you don’t want to find out in the middle of the night! Find an entry door lock with a deadbolt in a matching style and finish through Master Lock’s website.
Secure items in the yard like extension ladders and bikes with a cable lock wrapped around a stationary object.
Not living in your house yet but does that sliding glass door make you nervous? A security door bar can provide peace of mind as it resists forced entry through doors and sliding patio doors.
