It’s that time of year in the DC Metro area when we could be enjoying a gorgeous fall day one day and the next brings a taste of winter before we have a chance to switch to flannel sheets on the bed and need a down coat over a favorite sweater. Despite a constantly changing forecast, one constant in the fall are my boots. Tall ones, short ones, ones with and without heels, in soft suede or shiny glossy black, and a head-turning brown and white pair of authentic cowboy boots (purchased during a trip to Montana) are lined up in my closet like well-worn trophies though I admit that I’m always looking for my next perfect pair.
Years ago I had a pair of black leather mid-calf boots that I wore to death. A gift from my grandmother during my grad school days, they were perfectly worn in and had just the right heel height to make me feel like I could take on the world but in a way that didn’t leave my feet aching after a day of student teaching or long walks through Boston. Lovingly polished and resoled countless times, you can imagine how heartbroken I was when they finally wore out for good. Since then I’ve been on the lookout for a replacement of those boots. These days I need boots that are just as fashionable and functional for my days that combine mom duties like our walks to and from school, being the after school activity shuttle, weekends on the soccer field and baseball diamond, and all the fun stuff we do as a family in between. Bonus points for comfort and being able to dress them up and down!
It’s probably no surprise that when I was approached to take a look at Famous Footwear’s collection and choose a pair for myself, I went straight to their online boot selection. I loved the variety but also appreciated being able to narrow my choices based on the left hand navigation that allowed me to specify the type of boot I was looking for, size, color, width, heel height, and price to help me find what I was looking for faster. In a matter of minutes I found them. The Khombu Women’s Mae Boot. A steal at $54.99, these seemed to meet my requirements but would they be as comfortable as they looked, as warm as they claimed to be (the site promoted a Thermolite insole for weather rating), and meet my schizophrenic fashion needs of being capable of being dressed up and down? Yes!
In the last two weeks where the temperatures have fluctuated between 70 and 40 with three straight days of rain somewhere in there, my Mae Boots have held up beautifully to whatever weather challenge has been thrown at us.

There was an early morning pre-Thanksgiving parade with the Cub Scouts where I was able to sit and catch my breath for a minute before my son’s pack came marching out.

A shopping trip before enduring 9 degree temperatures for this year’s ICE at Gaylord National Harbor. Worn with a pair of wool socks, my feet were toasty warm despite the frigid temperatures.

A Saturday trip to the local library to stock up on favorite books with Thomas. I took a seat on the floor to read some new picture books while he went hunting for graphic novels to read.
Four days of rain had me walking on wet pavement through puddles as I made my way to and from school for pick up and drop off.

When the sun finally came out yesterday, I lingered a little longer on our front yard, soaking up the sun that I had missed so much over the past few days.
