We all know that satisfying pop of Bubble Wrap® but what’s the story on how it was invented? Since today is Bubble Wrap® Appreciation Day, it seems like an appropriate day to share the story of how this garage based invention became such a well known product. 50 years ago two engineers, Marc Chavannes and Al Fielding, were trying to make plastic wallpaper with a paper backing in a garage in Hawthorne, N.J Unfortunately no one wanted to buy their wallpaper so Marc and Al decided to create something new, which led to an industry-changing product that became Bubble Wrap®, the pioneering protective packaging technology. Today Sealed Air, the makers of Bubble Wrap®, is a Fortune 500 company that has over 25,000 employees worldwide.
Today in honor of Bubble Wrap® Appreciation Day, we’re breaking out the Bubble Wrap®!
Last summer you may have heard the controversy around Sealed Air as they announced the introduction of a new kind of Bubble Wrap® as people everywhere wondered if it would provide that same satisfying pop. The outrage surrounding the lack of potential pop from Bubble Wrap was incredible and as Sealed Air says, misunderstood. Bubble Wrap® does still pop like it always has. So go ahead. Pop away or find a new way to use and in honor of today being the Bubble Wrap® Appreciation Day, pop away or find a new way to use Bubble Wrap®.
We use it to protect breakables while our kids use the leftovers to stomp on but have you ever thought of using Bubble Wrap® in these ways?
- Making your own Bubble Wrap® Calendar. We’re going to use or box of Bubble Wrap from Sealed Air to create calendars like this one. You can also make a to-do task list, placing an item from your list behind every bubble and get the satisfaction of popping things off of your to-do list each day.
- Creating an original piece of pop art by injecting paint into Bubble Wrap® similar to these masterpieces
- Using it as a stress reliever. We all did this already but did you know that Sealed Air sells an Anti-Stress Box?
Whether you invent a new reason to use Bubble Wrap® (as a fashion accessory or a new sport with it) or just simply enjoy popping it, tag pictures and video of you, your kids, your pets enjoying Bubble Wrap® during #BubbleWrapDay and you might get retweeted!
