Parents who are beginning to consider buying their child their first computer and are overwhelmed with the number of options on the market should consider the Acer Aspire Switch 10 E. This affordably priced machine is a combination tablet and laptop that features a detachable keyboard, runs Microsoft Windows 10 home, has a durable screen made with Corning® Gorilla® Glass, and models are priced under $400.

1. No Need to Decide Between Tablet or Laptop

The combination tablet/laptop system gives kids the best of both worlds because it can be both a tablet and a laptop computer as desired. The overall design is similar to some of the high-end hybrid laptop/tablets on the market, but at a much more family-friendly price.

The base connects to the tablet thanks to the Acer Snap Hinge™ 2, a magnetized set of pins and plastic guides that connects the two with a snap.

Acer Aspire Switch 10 E Hinge features Acer’s Snap Hinge™ 2, a magnetized set of pins and plastic guides that connects the two with a snap

It is easy to remove the base of the unit and use it purely as a tablet when you don’t need the bulk of the keyboard. The Switch 10 E can be used as a laptop while at a desk or on the go. By detaching the keyboard, kids can watch a movie while lying comfortably on the couch or in bed. The tablet can be attached to the base facing forward or backwards, allowing the base to act as a stand both in “display” and “tent” modes.

When disconnecting the tablet from the keyboard base, it automatically offers to switch to tablet mode.

2. Perfectly Sized for Smaller Laps

The Acer Aspire Switch 10 E features a 10.1” screen. The overall size and shape of the unit is similar to that of a netbook except that the base detaches and becomes a tablet, giving you versatility for both work and entertainment. Kids will find the tablet is a good size for reading e-books, streaming shows, watching YouTube videos, or practicing writing skills by emailing friends and loved ones. It’s even a perfect size for building and playing in your Minecraft world!

3. Sufficient Computing Power

When families ask me about the type of computer to get their child as their first machine, I always ask them how their child will be using it before diving into numbers related to processor speed, hard drive size, etc. to ensure they’re buying something that will support their needs. One might think that the budget-friendly price of the Switch 10 E would make it a lesser machine but honestly, I was surprised when looking at the product specifications.

8 Reasons Why the Acer’s Aspire Switch 10 E Makes a Great First Computer for Kids. Info and giveaway on TechSavvyMama.com

The monitor/tablet of the Switch 10 E contains the main processor and all of your ports, a micro SD slot, mini HDMI port, and a headphone jack. The keyboard base of the unit houses a full-sized keyboard but also contains an extra hard drive, giving you substantially more storage than comparable systems on the market.

The review unit I received had an Intel Atom X5 processor, 2GB of RAM, 64GB flash drive, and a 500GB hard drive inside the keyboard-base, allowing you to store your life’s collection of movies, photos, and Hollywood movies. Not bad for models that are all priced under $400!

The Switch 10 E also runs Windows 10 home, a full-featured version of Windows with compatibility for all of your desktop applications. The unit has 2 cameras, one inward facing, good for selfies and video conferencing; and another one on the back of the tablet, good for taking photos and videos of the kids.

4. Durability

The Acer Aspire Switch 10 E feels sturdy and solid as a tablet should. The rear case has decorative, textured plastic to make it easier to hold. I also appreciate that it has a screen that’s made of Corning® Gorilla® Glass. Gorilla Glass, Corning’s toughest cover glass on the market, is featured on 13 Acer products including smartphones, tablets, and notebook computers like the Switch 10E.

8 Reasons Why the Acer’s Aspire Switch 10 E Makes a Great First Computer for Kids. Info and giveaway on TechSavvyMama.com

It allows the Switch 10E to be sleek while providing exceptional damage resistance to the scratches and bumps of everyday use. Parents and kids alike will appreciate how responsive the glass is when using the most sophisticated touch applications. It’s also easy-to-clean thanks to a special coating that makes it easy to wipe fingerprints off screens that are constantly being touched by small fingers.

5. Convenient for Streaming Movies or Shows

Studies show that this generation of kids prefers to stream movies or their favorite television shows on a digital device rather than watching them on a television, and the Acer Aspire Switch 10 E certainly provides convenience for consuming content. It features a 10.1-inch screen with 1280×800 HD resolution and the two display configurations allow viewers to watch their favorite shows and movies on the monitor with the keyboard out of the way. By having the base still attached, the tablet is held at an adjustable angle, and kids can still access the base’s giant hard drive, perfect for storing photos, videos, and movies.

6. Helps Reduces Exposure to Blue Light

With so much time spent in front of screens, the blue light that they emit is a growing concern among health professionals. The Acer Aspire Switch 10 E features Acer VisionCare™, so you can switch on Acer BluelightShield™ to reduce stress-causing blue light when you need to look at the screen for long periods.

Concerned about blue light and not sure what it is, why you should be concerned, or how to reduce your child’s exposure to it? My posts, What Parents Need to Know About Blue Light and  5 Ways to Help Reduce Your Child’s Exposure to Blue Light from Digital Devices can help answer your questions and give you strategies to prevent eye strain from screens that emit blue light.

7. Fun Color Choices

8 Reasons Why the Acer’s Aspire Switch 10 E Makes a Great First Computer for Kids: Multiple Colors and more! Details on TechSavvyMama.com

While you might not be letting your child choose the exact computer they’re getting, you can make them feel part of the decision making process by allowing them to select the color of the Acer Aspire Switch 10 E. Younger kids who want a device that reflects their personality will have fun choosing between gray, teal, and purple.

8. Budget Friendly

Models of the Aspire Switch 10 E are priced between $279-$379.

Summary

Even though the Acer Aspire Switch 10E is an affordable device, rest assured that you’re not sacrificing quality when purchasing a budget-friendly machine. Coming with Microsoft Office 365 pre-installed, it is well equipped for email, word processing, homework, web surfing, and watching videos. It isn’t a machine you would want to use for editing videos, but for day-to-day activities, and as your child’s first computer, it’s definitely a fine product to consider in the endless lineup available.

The Acer Aspire Switch 10 E looks like a fun 2-in-1 convertible that’s lightweight for the kids, but powerful enough to actually do some work on. With the Atom processor, the device runs cool and battery lasts long, as I’ve seen on other devices but you can run any Windows program out there or apps from the Windows Store. Probably the best class of devices available now with good balance of fun, work, capabilities, and price.

Looking at the Acer site, I learned that this device has dual-band WiFi (a/b/g/n). That’s great since I prefer to be on the faster, less congested 5Ghz band.

Today I’m heading home as a proud mom with a full heart for all that I’ve experienced on campus during her college years and am in disbelief I’ll be back for graduation next week. 🥹

The space portion of @silversat ‘s mission has fin The space portion of @silversat ‘s mission has finally come to an end but what we accomplished was pure CubeSat Joy!! 🛰️

I continue to be in awe that we put something in space that existed up there for 5 months. 🥰 Our CubeSat took photos 📸 and tweeted 🐦‍⬛them out as we hoped it would thanks to the many students (and parents!) who have been involved in our meaningful real-world hands-on STEM project that enabled them to learn about technology and space over the past 11 years.

I found some old notes from a 2015 meeting and under Questions, I wrote: “If we are successful, would we do this again?”

And the answer is yes! 🎉 Here’s to SilverSat 2.0 and involving more kids to dream up a new mission for our next Silver Spring CubeSat! 💕

Happy #MedalMonday to everyone who ran a race over Happy #MedalMonday to everyone who ran a race over the weekend and is adding new race bling to their collection! 🎉 I did a thing this weekend too but it didn’t involve another race! 😂Here’s the before, swipe ⬅️ for the after!

Inspired by seeing @allytbrett_runs ’s race medals, I did a little medal reorg that makes my OCD self happy. 🙌🏼Pro tip- Instead of sliding the bar of the medal rack through the ribbon, I looped the ribbon around the bar so all the medals face forward! This small thing made a huge difference and makes me happy every time I walk into my office!💕

My next race is the 25th anniversary @stjude Memphis Marathon Weekend on December 5th. I’m thinking this anniversary year medal will be the start of a new medal rack, just like my 15th anniversary medal started this collection.🫶🏼

If you want to run Memphis with me, race registration is open! Comment Memphis and I’ll DM you the registration link and happy to answer any and all race ❓s!

Started another Saturday morning at @OTFsilverspri Started another Saturday morning at @OTFsilverspring and finished my 900th class! 🧡🎉

Here’s to the most amazing coaches, fellow members becoming friends outside the studio, planning my work schedule around workouts, showing up for class on days I’d rather not just to avoid paying the cancellation fee (IYKYK), and continuing to count classes because I’m coming for you 1000! 💪🏼

WE did this Team Orangetheory! 🧡Thank you for joining me in fundraising, training, and running for St. Jude as charity runners! You showed yourselves what was possible outside the studio when you put your hard work inside to the test and made a difference for St. Jude kids and families. 🫶🏼

THANK YOU! Already excited for our studio to @runrocknroll DC next year!

Race medals are great but charity bling is better! Race medals are great but charity bling is better! 🏅When I first started running for @stjude 10 years ago, I thought I’d be one and done but here I am- 15 races later and having raised almost $50,000! 🎉

The goal has always been to help end childhood cancer and I feel so fortunate to have met the most amazing people along the way. My fellow @stjudedc Hero Ambassadors are a group of dedicated baddies who I adore. 🥰

We cheer for each other on and off the course and as my friend & fellow DC Hero Ambassador @jess_santora says, “My goal was never just to reach the finish line- it was to help more people get there too.” 🏃🏻‍♀️

Here’s to more races, more money raised for St. Jude, and forever friendships! Already excited (and fundraising) for St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend this December. ✨Fundraising link in bio and donations of any amount are appreciated to help me reach my $4,000 goal! 🙏🏼

When Team @otfsilverspring gets out of the studio When Team @otfsilverspring gets out of the studio for @runrockandroll DC! 🎉 Today 20 of us got out from under the orange lights and crushed 5Ks and half marathons to benefit @stjude kids and families as St. Jude Heroes.💪🏼

I am so proud of each and every one of us and especially incredibly grateful that OTFSS members said yes to running today! 🥰

We fundraised, trained, and ran to give families hope that their kids will survive childhood cancer and to support researchers as they work towards a cure for childhood cancer and other life threatening diseases. 💕

As a mom of 2, I know no parent should ever have to hear “your child has cancer” so thank you Team OTFSS for supporting St. Jude’s mission by running the streets of DC! We did it and I’m already looking forward to next year’s RNR DC race so we can do it again!🧡🧡🧡
