My mom used to always say that she didn’t care what we were reading, as long as we were reading something. When we were little, she celebrated us reading the comics as much as she did books we got from the library because she knew that by letting us read what we wanted to, would help us develop into the life long readers we are today.
These days I think of my mom, a former classroom teacher who retired after 30+ years in the classroom, whenever I see Thomas (age 10) reaching for a graphic novel or his favorite titles by National Geographic Kids. I bite my tongue and let him read what he wants because he’s completely content with Weird but True books. He loves the fascinating facts and beautifully designed pages because they capture and hold his interest. Chances are if he’s reading, he has Weird but True 8, ($7.99) the newest of the Weird but True series, in his hands or another National Geographic title.
Emily, on the other hand, is more of a National Geographic Kids Almanac 2017 kid. She received one years ago and every year it’s been on her Christmas wish list ever since and every year Santa has delivered. Even at almost 13, she can’t get enough of the photos, fun facts, news, activities, and features about animals, science, exploration, technology, culture, and more.
We have stacks and stacks of books by National Geographic Kids in our house and still can’t get enough! Each Kids Almanac or Weird but True book that comes out becomes a new must-have for our library. Not that I mind though because they keep our kids reading! Here are just a few more reasons why we love National Geographic Kids books!
Full of Facts
Facts, facts, and more facts! National Geographic Kids Almanac 2017 alone contains 350+ pages that are full of facts. 5,000 Awesome Facts (About Everything!) 3 ($19.99) really does contain more than 5000 facts and Weird but True 8 really does contain more than 300 facts that your kids will love reading. It’s hard to not learn something about the world and how it works while being inspired to make it a better place when you pick up at NatGeo Kids title.
Trusted STEM Learning
The core of National Geographic has always been science, education, and conservation. As an organization they extend this mission to their kids brand and create trusted materials for families that kids will love.
Eye Catching Designs
If you’ve ever picked up 5,000 Awesome Facts (About Everything!) 3, National Geographic Kids Almanac 2017, or Weird but True 8 it’s easy to tell why the design of the book appeals to kids. With gorgeous images that National Geographic is known for, fun colors, text boxes that seem to pop out from the page to highlight key facts, and more, the design of the books keeps kids’ eyes moving around the page so they want to read more.
Something for Every Reader
It’s no wonder that National Geographic Kids is the #1 publisher of nonfiction books for kids. They produce more than 100 titles per year that range from board books to leveled readers to almanacs to their wildly popular Weird but True series. I love that when I see a National Geographic Kids title that I know it will be of high quality and age appropriate for my kids or to give as a gift.
