Would you be mad if your child’s substitute teacher transformed history class into rehearsals for a rock band, replacing books with amps and putting musical instruments in student’s hands instead of pencils? As a parent and former teacher, I loved taking my guitar loving 12 year old to see School of Rock on Broadway earlier this year where this story line came to life and am pleased to partner with The National Theatre to give you a chance to win pair of tickets to see School of Rock in Washington, D.C. this January.
Based on the hit film, School of Rock follows Dewey Finn, a wannabe rock star posing as a substitute teacher who turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. It’s a fantastic musical that also features musical theater’s first-ever kids rock band playing their instruments live on stage as they perform 14 new songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber, including all the original songs from the movie.
This high-energy musical will only be at The National Theatre for 11 days (Wednesday, January 16 – Sunday, January 27) so be sure to grab tickets to one of the 15 shows while it’s in town by visiting TheNationalDC.com, in person at the National Theatre box office (weekdays, Noon to 6:00 PM), or by calling 800-514-3849.
3 Things to Know About School of Rock Before You Go:
- It’s a great family musical for kids ages 8+

Fun musical subs? Beastie Boys, AWOLNation, Imagine Dragons, CHVRCHES, Indigo Girls and Betty Who would all make me pay attention in class.
Would Lin Manuel Miranda count? If so him!
Would love to have Imagine Dragons as a teacher!
I would be Living On a Prayer if John Bon Jovi were my substitute teacher!
My favorite band Ozomatli!!!
Queen as a substitute teacher would be legendary! “Is this the real life? Or just fantasy?”
It would be a Beautiful Day if U2 were to be a substitute teacher!
I think Anna Kendrick would be hilarious as a substitute teacher, she is so low-key and sarcastic.
My choice of sub – Bruce Springsteen !
How do I even pick just one? There’s classic I love like The Clash, Queen, Led Zeppelin, or bands like The Strumbellas, Kings of Leon, AJR!
My daughter’s picks – Katy Perry or Maggie Rogers
