When I taught first grade, my main objective was to teach kids to read. I started each year with beginning readers who transformed into fluent readers during the course of the year. But teaching kids to read wasn’t easy. It was often hard to tell if a stumbling block was due to a child’s natural development or possible communication disorders.
It’s just as hard for us as parents to know the difference, especially if you’re not sure of the signs and what to do if you suspect your child might have a communication disorder. Recognizing the early warning signs of communication disorders, which include problems with a child’s speech or language abilities as well as their hearing, is just as important as knowing where to go for help.
In observance of May being Better Hearing and Speech Month, I’m partnering with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) to help you identify the early warning signs of speech, language, and hearing disorders and how to access free resources in your community.
This month I’m working with ASHA and their experts to host a Twitter chat where we’ll be discussing the signs of communication disorders in school-age kids. We’ll be talking about the warning signs associated with communication disorders and milestones to look for as your child grows to help you recognize early signs of a potential disorder, how to get your child evaluated if you suspect a problem with their speech or hearing, and the many free resources and early intervention programs available to the public.
Better Hearing and Speech Month #BHSMSchoolChat Twitter Chat this Wednesday, May 22 from 1-2 pm ET
What signs should you look for? How early should you get your child evaluated? What help is available if my child does have a speech, language, or hearing disorder? I know from my years of teaching that parents aren’t always aware of the early warning signs of these disorders. However, it’s important to remember that early identification can make treatment less expensive and take less time.
We’ll be addressing these topics and more during our Twitter chat on Wednesday, May 22, that will feature guest experts from ASHA and Amazon gift cards as prizes!
