I was recently asked to help define what makes a mom tech savvy.
Hmmm….A Tech Savvy Mama is so many things.
Where do I begin?
To me, a Tech Savvy Mama is:
- someone who realizes that technology is an important piece of her child’s world and helps makes educated decisions about the best technology for her children.
- knowledgeable about qualities of good websites for children and carefully screens websites to ensure that they are age appropriate and educational for her children while not taking them to scary places on the internet through an abundance of ads.
- aware of the fact that she can use the software already on her computer to create learning opportunities for her children. She uses programs like PowerPoint and imports digital pictures, or photos of their artwork, to create customized digital storybooks for her children.
- someone who understands technology and the many issues that it presents for today’s children. She carefully balances computer time with free play, takes into account her child’s needs when purchasing a computer that they will use, and is knowledgeable about issues such as of ergonomics as they relate to children.
A Tech Savvy Mom is an educated consumer who wants her children to experience the best technology possible.
She may not consider herself Tech Savvy, but is always willing to learn through a quick Google search!
Whether or not you consider yourself a Tech Savvy Mama, what qualities do you think a Tech Savvy Mama should possess? Leave a comment!

Thanks for your input! Great that you put your definition of a tech savvy mom on your site so you can share it with your readers and we can see it through the link!
You are welcome! It is a great question and I really and truly wasn’t meaning to spam you like TypePad thought. This was the only solution I could come up for others to see my definition!
A tech savvy mama is comfortable using different types of technology She picks up skills from observing her children in action.
A tech savvy mama is up to date with new technologies and knows how her children are using them.
A tech savvy mama is not afraid to make mistakes and ask questions.
Someone smart enough to use google to find answers
While not quite a tech mama myself, I’d suggest two things for your excellent list (and Gray Matters’ “mistakes” addition, which is spot on):
A tech savvy mama keeps tabs on the technology that her kids are using at school and encourages their teachers and administrators to keep abreast of the tools they need. Let’s go 21st century skills!
A tech savvy mama shares her knowledge with various family members (e.g. grandparents and in-laws) to enhance communication across the miles.
I think my mom was the first tech saavy mama — waaaayyy back when the school she teaches at got their first computer she was the only teacher willing to take it home for the summer to learn how to use it. We, her kids, got the advantage of having a computer at home years before we ever could have affored one. Now, she is now the technology instructor, web master, and has networked the entire school!
