We’re gearing up to go back to school in our house. Little Miss Techie and Captain Computer will start school after Labor Day and next week I’ll be returning to work as a Technology Magnet Coordinator in a school.
So as thoughts of the pool and summer start to fade away to be replaced by backpacks, learning with friends, and lunch at school, it’s time to study up for a little Tech Savvy Mama quiz.
Today’s topic is kids and cell phones. Many of you have asked me to cover this topic and provide advice about what age kids should have phones and what to look for when purchasing a phone for kids. While I’m truly flattered that you would ask me for my thoughts, my kids don’t have cell phones yet so I want to hear your thoughts.
Ponder these questions and come back tomorrow to post your answers. Don’t worry it will be multiple choice and instead of a grade, I’m doing a great giveaway at the end of the week!
- At what age should children have a mobile phone?
- What would motivate you the most to buy your child a phone?
- What concerns you the most about providing your child with a mobile phone?
- If you were considering buying a mobile phone for your child, what would be the #1 purchase factor?
Thanks for reading Tech Savvy Mama through your feed!

1. I don’t think there is a specific age — each situation should be assessed individually.
2. I was motivated to buy my daughter a phone when she turned 12 and was being left at practices while I toted my younger ones around. I wanted her to feel like she could contact me in case something happened.
3. My biggest concern is that she is able to talk to people “secretly”. I prevent my kids from having phones and tvs in their rooms so that I can monitor their activity. A cell phone makes that more difficult.
4. The #1 purchase factor is cost. It has to fit into our budget.
