October may be breast cancer awareness month but really, this is an issue that needs to be at the forefront every day of each month in the year. In my last post about breast cancer, I mentioned shopping pink and supporting companies who are donating a portion of their proceeds towards breast cancer awareness. Sure pink products are great but what has troubled me about supporting the cause is how little money actually goes towards breast cancer related causes.
While the American Cancer Society does benefit from some promotions, Dr. Lichtenfeld strongly urges consumers to take a close look at the promotion and to see how much money is actually going directly to the breast cancer related cause. Some companies state a minimum dollar amount and maximum donation towards the cause.
For example, the annual Yoplait Save Lids to Save Lives promotion will donate 10 cents to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation. They will donate at least $500,000 and a maximum of $1.5 million for all the lids sent in between now and December 31, 2009. Other promotions that feature pink products don’t actually state that any money is being donated towards breast cancer related causes through your purchase!
If shopping pink, be sure to read the fine print and if you are at all wary then please donate directly to organizations like the American Cancer Society and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and National Breast Cancer Foundation because the full amount of your donation will go towards breast cancer related causes.
Stepping off my soap box now.
