Update: A reader shared that according to NBC’s Today Moms, JC Penny is pulling the shirt from its site and issued an apology which can be found at the bottom of the Today Moms post.
As a teacher and mom of a 7 1/2 year old who loves school and learning, I am livid about this JCPenney shirt shared by Mommyality.
Yes, in fact it DOES say “I’m too pretty to do homework so my brother has to do it for me.“
And yes, the description just says “Who has time for homework when there’s a new Justin Bieber album out? She’ll love this tee that’s just as cute and sassy as she is.“
Sorry but that’s not messaging that I ever want our daughter, her friends, or her classmates to hear or see.
It’s great to be smart and attractive and it’s not anything to make fun of or be ashamed about. I want my daughter to embrace being intelligent while being well rounded enough to be up on the latest pop songs that she sings along to in the car on the way to dive practice and listens to as she plays Legos with her brother.
I don’t ever want her to think she’s not as smart as the boys or to have her self esteem suffer.
While this shirt has caused a social media firestorm and generated publicity beyond belief, it’s reminded me of my commitment to provide both of my children with the knowledge they crave so they can be as smart as they want to be.

Wow. I’m pretty speechless about this but definitely share in your anger and am deeply disappointed.
I totally agree! This is enraging almost as maddening as the Newsweek tweet/post yesterday about the 50 Hottest Student Bodies with the title “Don’t Spend Four Years In Uglyville.” Besides being a semantic failure the post enraged me in several ways. Since when did that matter? Our American obsession with beauty certainly seems to be infiltrating every area of life in an especially negative way for women of all ages. Thank you for posting this now let’s figure out how to change this mindset! Here’s the link to the Newsweek post:http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/features/college-rankings/2011/most-beautiful.html
Oh my word! Thanks for bringing this to my attention, though it does not surprise me! Is it worth it to complain, or is it just another t-shirt that I should ignore?
That is horrible. How disappointing that JC Penney is selling this crap.
Wow. Who comes up with these? I’m guessing they don’t have daughters.
