Fooz Kids: Convenient Kid Friendly Online Portal with Parental Controls

September 1, 2011 By Leticia

Fooz Kids Happy Kids are Fooz Kids

Thank you to Fooz Kids for providing me with an All-In-One pack to review. The opinions I’ve expressed here are solely my own and represent my honest viewpoint.

About Fooz Kids

Fooz Kids is a new application that allows parents to control their child’s exploration of the internet in an age appropriate way. It provides a list of recommended websites based on age that can be edited by through the Parental Dashboard while also limiting contact to a trusted network of pre-approved friends. For an annual fee of $11.99, Fooz Kids is downloaded and installed as a software program that takes over the desktop and serves as a portal to websites, email, and social networking, making it easy for a parent to manage internet usage in their home through a single interface.

Fooz Kids Setup

Setting up accounts using the Parental Dashboard is easy and can be completed in mere minutes. Enter in the child’s name, username, and birthday and then toggle between the members of your family in the upper left corner of the screen using the appropriate icon. More time is needed to screen the websites, videos, games, and crafts that are automatically available to your child.

Easy to use Parental Dashboard navigation
Once accounts are set up for each child, Fooz Kids automatically selects pre-screened content that they deem as age appropriate. The list is extensive and curates websites, videos, games, and crafts throughout the internet from sites like PBSKids, Disney, NickJr, etc. It’s worthwhile to go through the recommended content and edit using the Fooz Kids List feature. Otherwise the list is overwhelming for kids and may not be the most age appropriate content based on your child’s needs. To narrow the list, simply uncheck the box next to each one and it won’t show up on the dashboard viewed by your child.

Edit Fooz Kids recommendations to fit your child’s needs
If your child has a favorite that’s not already part of Fooz Kids, it can be added using the MyChannel feature for additional customization.

MyChannel is a way to add favorite sites
Click on the gray add button and a search box will pop up, allowing you to enter search terms to locate favorite content.

Fooz Kids Dashboard- A Child’s View

When Fooz Kids is launched, it takes over the monitor and has a simple interface that allows children to click on their avatar to access their specific content.

Content is presented through icons and limited text, making it easy for non-readers to find the content they want to use. Content is listed in alphabetical order, reinforcing the ABCs for younger users.

Scroll through the alphabetical listing of icons
using the orange arrow on the right
Besides the alphabetical list, children can also access content according to type. The big buttons and icons keep with the kid-friendly easy-to-navigate style of the site.
Or select content based on type

Advantages of Fooz Kids

  • Makes content easy to find. Often times parents don’t know where to start looking for good sites for their kids. Fooz Kids provides a wealth of content that is filtered according to the child’s age eliminating some guesswork about where to go.
  • Takes over the desktop to protect files. When Fooz Kids is launched, it takes over the desktop of the computer. Kids can’t get to other items unless the account password is entered. This is great if it’s being used on a designated kid computer but could be an annoyance on a shared machine. Regardless, locking down the desktop with Fooz Kids helps protect files and other sensitive documents that you don’t want your child to accidentally click on or delete.
  • Create accounts for each child. The ability to create as many accounts as needed for children in the family allows customization according to age, skills, and interests.
  • Install on multiple computers. Add Fooz Kids to other computers in your house by visiting the site and logging into your account. The application can be downloaded for free for additional machines.
  • Monitor activity through Fooz Kids University. Fooz Kids U provides a report card- an overview of lessons completed by grade, time spent on the computer, and progress.
  • Works with Macs and PCs.
  • Affordable. It costs $11.99/ year but I can give my friends a so feel free to try it and let me know what you think.
Summary

The affordable price and easy-to-use interface of Fooz Kids makes it an appealing choice for families with kids who are beginning to explore the internet. While the site does provide a multitude of parental control features to limit content and interactions while monitoring online activity, it should never be a replacement for personally reviewing content or having conversations with your child about topics relating to online safety.

My best advice to parents of college students? Whe My best advice to parents of college students? When they say “you should come” - GO! ✈️

Over the last 4 years it’s been so wonderful to be invited for glimpses of Emily’s life on campus. I’ve been welcomed by her amazing friends who have become part of our family, met the professors, faculty & staff she talks so fondly of, and gotten to know fellow parents through trips to Family Weekend all while enjoying time with my best girl. 💕

Today I’m heading home as a proud mom with a full heart for all that I’ve experienced on campus during her college years and am in disbelief I’ll be back for graduation next week. 🥹

I continue to be in awe that we put something in space that existed up there for 5 months. 🥰 Our CubeSat took photos 📸 and tweeted 🐦‍⬛them out as we hoped it would thanks to the many students (and parents!) who have been involved in our meaningful real-world hands-on STEM project that enabled them to learn about technology and space over the past 11 years.

I found some old notes from a 2015 meeting and under Questions, I wrote: “If we are successful, would we do this again?”

And the answer is yes! 🎉 Here’s to SilverSat 2.0 and involving more kids to dream up a new mission for our next Silver Spring CubeSat! 💕

Happy #MedalMonday to everyone who ran a race over Happy #MedalMonday to everyone who ran a race over the weekend and is adding new race bling to their collection! 🎉 I did a thing this weekend too but it didn’t involve another race! 😂Here’s the before, swipe ⬅️ for the after!

Inspired by seeing @allytbrett_runs ’s race medals, I did a little medal reorg that makes my OCD self happy. 🙌🏼Pro tip- Instead of sliding the bar of the medal rack through the ribbon, I looped the ribbon around the bar so all the medals face forward! This small thing made a huge difference and makes me happy every time I walk into my office!💕

My next race is the 25th anniversary @stjude Memphis Marathon Weekend on December 5th. I’m thinking this anniversary year medal will be the start of a new medal rack, just like my 15th anniversary medal started this collection.🫶🏼

If you want to run Memphis with me, race registration is open! Comment Memphis and I’ll DM you the registration link and happy to answer any and all race ❓s!

Here’s to the most amazing coaches, fellow members becoming friends outside the studio, planning my work schedule around workouts, showing up for class on days I’d rather not just to avoid paying the cancellation fee (IYKYK), and continuing to count classes because I’m coming for you 1000! 💪🏼

WE did this Team Orangetheory! 🧡Thank you for joining me in fundraising, training, and running for St. Jude as charity runners! You showed yourselves what was possible outside the studio when you put your hard work inside to the test and made a difference for St. Jude kids and families. 🫶🏼

THANK YOU! Already excited for our studio to @runrocknroll DC next year!

Race medals are great but charity bling is better! Race medals are great but charity bling is better! 🏅When I first started running for @stjude 10 years ago, I thought I’d be one and done but here I am- 15 races later and having raised almost $50,000! 🎉

The goal has always been to help end childhood cancer and I feel so fortunate to have met the most amazing people along the way. My fellow @stjudedc Hero Ambassadors are a group of dedicated baddies who I adore. 🥰

We cheer for each other on and off the course and as my friend & fellow DC Hero Ambassador @jess_santora says, “My goal was never just to reach the finish line- it was to help more people get there too.” 🏃🏻‍♀️

Here’s to more races, more money raised for St. Jude, and forever friendships! Already excited (and fundraising) for St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend this December. ✨Fundraising link in bio and donations of any amount are appreciated to help me reach my $4,000 goal! 🙏🏼

When Team @otfsilverspring gets out of the studio When Team @otfsilverspring gets out of the studio for @runrockandroll DC! 🎉 Today 20 of us got out from under the orange lights and crushed 5Ks and half marathons to benefit @stjude kids and families as St. Jude Heroes.💪🏼

I am so proud of each and every one of us and especially incredibly grateful that OTFSS members said yes to running today! 🥰

We fundraised, trained, and ran to give families hope that their kids will survive childhood cancer and to support researchers as they work towards a cure for childhood cancer and other life threatening diseases. 💕

As a mom of 2, I know no parent should ever have to hear “your child has cancer” so thank you Team OTFSS for supporting St. Jude’s mission by running the streets of DC! We did it and I’m already looking forward to next year’s RNR DC race so we can do it again!🧡🧡🧡
