How to Control Your Home Theater from Your Smartphone: Logitech Harmony Smart Control Remote Review

March 20, 2014 By Leticia

Logitech Harmony Smart Control Remote

The Logitech Harmony Smart Control Remote system turns your smartphone into a full-fledged Harmony Remote capable of controlling all of your home theater and stereo devices.

If you’ve never used a Harmony remote, they are the industry standard for high-quality Universal Remotes. They can completely eliminate a stack of remotes and make all of your mismatched brands of audio and video gear work seamlessly. With this latest product, they’re moving the Logitech remote brains onto your smartphone through an app that eliminating the need to use a PC to configure the remote.

How it Works

The Harmony Smart Control product comes with a little hub that can sit on or in your TV cabinet, or even across the room. The hub attaches to your home WiFi network and speaks to your phone via WiFi. The Harmony Hub takes the commands from your phone and then translates them into infra-red remote control commands to your different home theater gear. The hub also speaks Bluetooth in case you have devices that can only be controlled with Bluetooth (for example, playing DVDs on an Xbox 360).

Easy Setup

Download the Harmony App onto your Apple iOS or Android device and then configure the remote and setup the activities directly from the mobile device. I say mobile device because you could use your iPhone or Android phone, but you could also use an iPod touch, iPad, or an Android tablet.

During setup, it asks you the make and model of your TV, cable box, DVD player, gaming systems, and stereo receiver. It then asks you very simple questions like “What device controls the volume?” and “What input does the TV need to be on in order to watch a DVD?” After you answer the questions, the remote programs everything for you.

Using the Harmony Smart Control Remote

With Harmony products, you push a single button for an activity, like “Watch TV”. This turns on your TV, DVR/cable box home theater receiver, and seta the correct input on the TV. It remembers which devices are already turned on and which ones are turned off, so if you decide to watch a DVD later, it knows to leave the TV on, switch the input, turn the cable box off, and turn the DVD player on.

Everything described above is “basic Harmony Remote” capabilities. With the mobile app used as your remote, there’s even more flexibility that includes:

  • Customizing the remote control button layouts
  • Re-arranging the functions as you wish
  • Using gestures to operate the remote,
  • Assigning buttons for your favorite TV channels
  • Assigning gestures to different remote functions like “swipe left” to rewind, or “double-tap” to pause

When first hearing about this product, it occurred to me:  I have a family. What if I take a call while watching TV and leave the room? Does that mean the family can’t watch TV while I’m gone? What if the kids are home with a babysitter and I take my phone out to dinner? And most importantly, what if you watch TV at night and your smartphone needs to be charged?

Logitech already thought of all of these scenarios. The kit comes with a small and elegant physical remote that can also be used. This remote doesn’t have quite as many buttons as a typical stand-alone Harmony remote and it doesn’t have an LCD screen but for daily operation of most tasks, it works great.

This small remote isn’t an afterthought either. Its elegantly designed with curved edges, smooth lines, and a grippy back-side. It’s easy to hold in your hand and use. The basic design is that of a normal remote so it won’t scare your technology-ignorant house guests. The stand-alone remote is also something you’d be willing to let the kids use so they don’t spill juice on your iPhone or drop it off the side of the couch.

Summary

The combination of the smartphone app + the stand-alone basic remote is a full featured package that provides more additional features than the stand-alone remotes. You really can’t go wrong with any Harmony product and with the PC-free setup on your smartphone while sitting on the couch, setup is a breeze.

The Logitech Harmony Smart Control Remote retails for $129 and is currently available from Amazon for $99.99.

My best advice to parents of college students? Whe My best advice to parents of college students? When they say “you should come” - GO! ✈️

Over the last 4 years it’s been so wonderful to be invited for glimpses of Emily’s life on campus. I’ve been welcomed by her amazing friends who have become part of our family, met the professors, faculty & staff she talks so fondly of, and gotten to know fellow parents through trips to Family Weekend all while enjoying time with my best girl. 💕

Today I’m heading home as a proud mom with a full heart for all that I’ve experienced on campus during her college years and am in disbelief I’ll be back for graduation next week. 🥹

I continue to be in awe that we put something in space that existed up there for 5 months. 🥰 Our CubeSat took photos 📸 and tweeted 🐦‍⬛them out as we hoped it would thanks to the many students (and parents!) who have been involved in our meaningful real-world hands-on STEM project that enabled them to learn about technology and space over the past 11 years.

I found some old notes from a 2015 meeting and under Questions, I wrote: “If we are successful, would we do this again?”

And the answer is yes! 🎉 Here’s to SilverSat 2.0 and involving more kids to dream up a new mission for our next Silver Spring CubeSat! 💕

Happy #MedalMonday to everyone who ran a race over Happy #MedalMonday to everyone who ran a race over the weekend and is adding new race bling to their collection! 🎉 I did a thing this weekend too but it didn’t involve another race! 😂Here’s the before, swipe ⬅️ for the after!

Inspired by seeing @allytbrett_runs ’s race medals, I did a little medal reorg that makes my OCD self happy. 🙌🏼Pro tip- Instead of sliding the bar of the medal rack through the ribbon, I looped the ribbon around the bar so all the medals face forward! This small thing made a huge difference and makes me happy every time I walk into my office!💕

My next race is the 25th anniversary @stjude Memphis Marathon Weekend on December 5th. I’m thinking this anniversary year medal will be the start of a new medal rack, just like my 15th anniversary medal started this collection.🫶🏼

If you want to run Memphis with me, race registration is open! Comment Memphis and I’ll DM you the registration link and happy to answer any and all race ❓s!

Here’s to the most amazing coaches, fellow members becoming friends outside the studio, planning my work schedule around workouts, showing up for class on days I’d rather not just to avoid paying the cancellation fee (IYKYK), and continuing to count classes because I’m coming for you 1000! 💪🏼

Race medals are great but charity bling is better! Race medals are great but charity bling is better! 🏅When I first started running for @stjude 10 years ago, I thought I’d be one and done but here I am- 15 races later and having raised almost $50,000! 🎉

The goal has always been to help end childhood cancer and I feel so fortunate to have met the most amazing people along the way. My fellow @stjudedc Hero Ambassadors are a group of dedicated baddies who I adore. 🥰

We cheer for each other on and off the course and as my friend & fellow DC Hero Ambassador @jess_santora says, “My goal was never just to reach the finish line- it was to help more people get there too.” 🏃🏻‍♀️

Here’s to more races, more money raised for St. Jude, and forever friendships! Already excited (and fundraising) for St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend this December. ✨Fundraising link in bio and donations of any amount are appreciated to help me reach my $4,000 goal! 🙏🏼

When Team @otfsilverspring gets out of the studio When Team @otfsilverspring gets out of the studio for @runrockandroll DC! 🎉 Today 20 of us got out from under the orange lights and crushed 5Ks and half marathons to benefit @stjude kids and families as St. Jude Heroes.💪🏼

I am so proud of each and every one of us and especially incredibly grateful that OTFSS members said yes to running today! 🥰

We fundraised, trained, and ran to give families hope that their kids will survive childhood cancer and to support researchers as they work towards a cure for childhood cancer and other life threatening diseases. 💕

As a mom of 2, I know no parent should ever have to hear “your child has cancer” so thank you Team OTFSS for supporting St. Jude’s mission by running the streets of DC! We did it and I’m already looking forward to next year’s RNR DC race so we can do it again!🧡🧡🧡
