Just as it’s important to teach your kids the rules of the road when riding a bike, it’s also necessary to teach them about how to keep their ride safe and give them kid-friend tools to make them want to take care of your investment. Bike locks and padlocks are so much more interesting to kids than they were when I was little. Colorful padlocks with letters and numbers, set your own locks featuring letters, and directional locks are appealing to kids and so much easier to use than the ones from my childhood.
Thanks to my work with Master Lock, our family has been able to test a variety of bike locks and padlocks. Here are three of our favorites that are great for any young or experienced rider to use to secure their bike because they’re colorful and fun for kids to use, even if they’re riding a bike with training wheels.
If you’re heading out for a bike ride this weekend, take stock of the combination locks and bike locks that you currently have. Make sure that you have long enough cable locks to lock frames and wheels and all the bikes in your family’s collection. If you’re short of locks, take your kids to the store and let them choose their own. Children have more pride in their belongings and tend to want to take care of their stuff more when they’re personally invested in choosing the safety product to keep it safe.
