Summer Travel Smarts: Protecting Your Smartphone While on Vacation (w. $250 Target GC giveaway!)

August 1, 2014 By Leticia

Protecting Your Smartphone on Vacation This is a sponsored post. With just about a month until school starts, it’s a prime month for summer getaways but before you dust off that suitcase, take some time to assess the protection of one of your most valuable travel tools — your smartphone. We know we have a bit of a romance with our smartphones and for trips, they serve as the ultimate travel companion, helping us during the pre-flight process by helping us plan activities and store travel documents even before we leave. They also allow us to leave behind our paper boarding passes, maps, travel guides, cameras, iPod and books to lighten our loads and streamline travel. What are we doing on our cell phones when we’re traveling? According to Asurion, the recognized industry leader in technology protection, here are the top five mobile activities for summer travelers*

  1. Taking photos (69%)
  2. Getting maps/directions (47%)
  3. Listening to music (45%)
  4. Posting social media photos (45%)
  5. Playing games (40%)

Being on the go, enjoying outdoor activities, and spending time around the water can pose a risk to cell phones. It’s important to put a good screen protector on your phone along with a durable case but since nothing ruins a vacation like a lost, stolen, or damaged cellphone, it’s also important to consider investing in device protection so that you can remain connected, entertained and up to date during the summer and throughout the year. Travel Goes High Tech Asurion sees more claims filed for lost, stolen and damaged cellphones in July and August than any other months of the year. According to Asurion claims data, the top ten cities where phones are most likely to be lost or stolen during the summer months (May through September) are:

  1. Miami
  2. San Jose
  3. New York
  4. San Francisco
  5. Los Angeles
  6. Chicago
  7. San Antonio
  8. Houston
  9. Las Vegas
  10. Orlando

With so many snatch and grabs on our Metro system and the high number of tourists who visit our city each year, I’m a bit surprised that Washington, D.C. didn’t make the list but am also a bit relieved! So as you plan to head off on that final summer getaway, ask your wireless carrier about adding mobile protection to your phone this summer so you can travel worry free thanks to the confidence that Asurion provides rapid mobile device replacement in the event of loss, theft, damage or post-warranty malfunction. In the event of a mobile emergency when traveling, Asurion can generally get you a replacement overnight.  Asurion’s Premier Support Solutions technology professionals can answer a wide variety of customers’ questions and resolve problems related to wireless products and devices connected with them so can keep enjoying your vacation without the worry and hassle of going without your phone for too long.

Enter to win a $250 Target gift card from Asurion!

Since Asurion recognizes that summer is coming to a close, they want to give one very lucky Tech Savvy Mama reader a chance to win a $250 gift card to Target to spend on items for a last summer hurrah or on things for back to school. Enter using the Rafflecopter form below and good luck! a Rafflecopter giveaway

I am more worried about my kids losing my phone while we travel… that was the hardest thing to keep track of when we flew earlier this summer. They would leave it on the seats, in the pockets. BUT… I was also thankful for the distraction for them when needed.

I tried just wiping it off, hoping it just was wet on the outside. I couldn’t be so lucky as soon as I turned it on it made a sizzling noise an flickered and it was done.

Two years ago, I had my first mishap with my cell phone. I had a habit of dropping my phone into a grocery bag when I carried them in the house. I had done this for many years without any issues. This one time, I dropped my phone into a bag and carried it the house. After making a few trips, went to get my phone, it was at the bottom, covered in Ginger Ale. A bottle had broke, flooding my phone. Thankfully, I had Asurion, my phone was replaced. I never threw my phone in a grocery bag again 🙂

Today we’re celebrating National Rescue Dog Day Today we’re celebrating National Rescue Dog Day because we’re so glad Goldie and Murphy are part of our family! 🐶 We gave Goldie her forever home when she was 6 months old. She had been given up by her original family because she was just too much for them. She was an enthusiastic pup who loved to jump straight up in the air when she got excited and she used to hop the fence in the mornings to go visit her best dog friend, Katy, over our back fence. She still jumps from standing when she sees a deer, meets a favorite dog friend, or gets a visit from @lisatasch but now at age 5, she’s more calm and forever faithful. 🦮We met Murphy and his 9 brothers and sisters just days after he was born although we didn’t know he would be the puppy we’d claim as ours. Murphy has that puppy energy but in his quiet moments is a total love bug. He hogs the free space in our king bed (he even has his own pillow!) and loves nothing more than to press his body into me or lie directly on me. 🐾 Goldie and Murphy came to us through @labrescuelrcp and we couldn’t be happier that they’re part of our family! ❤️ #rescuedogday #labrescue #labrador #adoptdontshop

I am so looking forward to running in Memphis again this December! 🎉 If you’ve ever thought of running a race that does so much good in the world, join me! I’d love to have you come to Memphis and run with me! Or you can always donate through the fundraising link in my bio. ❤️ #stjude #stjudeheroes #memphis #stjudedmv
